POSITION SUMMARY
*The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)* serves as a vital member of the healthcare team, working under the guidance of a registered nurse to provide essential services that cater to the personal needs of patients and enhance their comfort. The hospice aide is tasked with monitoring patients, reporting observations, and documenting care provided. Assignments will be delegated by a Registered Nurse to ensure quality, continuity, and safety in patient care.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The hospice aide's responsibilities encompass, but are not limited to:
  • Attending to personal care needs as assigned and responding promptly to patient requests. Report any inability to perform tasks to the Case Manager immediately.
  • Utilizing effective communication techniques with patients and families, ensuring ethical and respectful care, including maintaining confidentiality.
  • Ensuring patient safety and using equipment properly (e.g., foot stools, side rails, oxygen equipment).
  • Providing personal care such as bathing, back rubs, oral hygiene, and changing bed linens as required.
  • Assisting patients with dressing and undressing as needed.
  • Planning and preparing nutritious meals, including grocery shopping as assigned.
  • Aiding in feeding patients as required.
  • Measuring and recording vital signs including temperatures, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure as directed, demonstrating competency in these skills.
  • Monitoring and caring for patients' skin to prevent tissue breakdown.
  • Reporting significant changes in patients' conditions to the Case Manager, while being aware of interpersonal dynamics involving caregivers and family members.
  • Supporting patients in ambulation and exercise as instructed by nursing staff or therapists.
  • Facilitating normal range of motion exercises and patient positioning as directed.
  • Assisting with self-administered medications as permitted by state regulations, such as reminders.
  • Providing assistance with bedpans and urinals, and light laundry tasks as assigned.
  • Performing range of motion exercises and other simple procedures as directed, demonstrating competency.
  • Offering respite care for patients, families, and caregivers when present on-site.
  • Maintaining cleanliness and orderliness in patients' living areas as assigned.
  • Adhering to organizational documentation standards and maintaining professional conduct.
  • Participating in quality assessment and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Showing respect for the environment and personal needs of patients and their families.

LIMITATIONS OF THE ROLE:
The hospice aide is not permitted to engage in activities classified as nursing practice according to the Nurse Practice Act. Specifically, the aide will not administer medications, take physician orders, or perform procedures requiring the expertise of a licensed nurse, such as sterile techniques.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Fulfillment of state training requirements.
  • Completion of at least 75 hours of classroom and supervised practical training, with 16 hours of classroom instruction prior to 16 hours of practical training.
  • Minimum age of 18 years.
  • Ability to read, follow written instructions, and document care provided.
  • Understanding of hospice philosophy and comfort in providing specialized care to terminally ill patients.
  • Positive references from previous employers.
  • Self-directed with the ability to work independently, comfortable with issues surrounding death and dying, and able to maintain a calm demeanor in patients' homes.
  • Empathy for the needs of the ill, injured, frail, and impaired individuals.
  • Current CPR certification is required.
  • Demonstrated tact, patience, and good personal hygiene.
  • Valid driver's license and insured vehicle in good working condition.
  • Successful completion of a probationary period to ensure competency in the above qualifications, documented by the supervisor and the employee.
