POSITION SUMMARY
*The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)* serves as a vital member of the healthcare team, operating under the guidance of a registered nurse to deliver essential services tailored to the needs of patients, ensuring their comfort and well-being. The hospice aide plays a crucial role in monitoring patients, communicating observations, and documenting care provided.

The hospice aide's responsibilities encompass, but are not limited to, the following:
- Addressing personal care needs promptly after receiving patient assignments. Report any inability to perform specific tasks to the Case Manager immediately.
- Engaging with patients and families using effective communication techniques while maintaining ethical standards and confidentiality.
- Ensuring patient safety and proper use of equipment (e.g., foot stools, side rails, oxygen devices).
- Providing personal care, including bathing, back rubs, oral hygiene, and changing bed linens as required.
- Assisting patients with dressing and undressing as needed.
- Planning and preparing nutritious meals, including grocery shopping, as assigned.
- Aiding in feeding patients as necessary.
- Taking and documenting vital signs such as temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure as instructed, demonstrating appropriate skills competency.
- Monitoring and caring for patients' skin to prevent tissue breakdown.
- Reporting significant changes in patients' conditions to the Case Manager and being aware of the dynamics involving caregivers and family members.
- Supporting patients in ambulation and exercise as directed by the hospice nurse or therapist.
- Facilitating normal range of motion and assisting with transfers/positioning as instructed.
- Aiding with self-administered medications as permitted by state regulations, such as reminders.
- Providing assistance with bedpans and urinals, along with light laundry tasks as assigned.
- Performing range of motion exercises and other simple procedures as part of therapy services as directed.
- Offering respite for patients, families, and caregivers when present on-site, as appropriate.
- Maintaining cleanliness and orderliness in patients' living areas as assigned.
- Adhering to organizational documentation standards and professional conduct guidelines.
- Participating in quality assessment and performance improvement initiatives.
- Respecting the personal needs and environment of patients and their families.
LIMITATIONS OF THE ROLE:
The hospice aide will not engage in activities considered nursing practices as defined by the Nurse Practice Act. Specifically, the aide will not administer medications, take physician orders, or perform procedures requiring the expertise of a licensed nurse, such as sterile techniques.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Completion of state training requirements.
- A minimum of 75 hours of classroom and supervised practical training, with 16 hours of classroom instruction completed prior to a mandatory 16 hours of practical training.
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Ability to read, follow written instructions, and document care provided.
- Understanding of hospice philosophy and comfort in providing specialized care to terminally ill patients.
- Positive references from previous employers.
- Self-directed with the ability to work independently. Comfortable with issues surrounding death and dying, maintaining a calm demeanor in patients' homes.
- Empathy for the needs of the ill, injured, frail, and impaired individuals.
- Current CPR certification is required.
- Demonstrates patience, tact, and good personal hygiene.
- Must possess a valid driver's license and have automobile insurance that meets organizational requirements.
- Successful completion of a probationary period to ensure competency in the above qualifications, documented by the supervisor and the employee.
