POSITION SUMMARY
*The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)* serves as a vital member of the healthcare team, working under the guidance of a registered nurse to provide essential services that cater to the personal needs of patients and enhance their comfort. The hospice aide is tasked with monitoring the patient's condition, reporting observations, and meticulously documenting care provided.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The hospice aide's responsibilities encompass, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Delivering personal care as assigned, promptly addressing patient requests. If a task cannot be performed, it must be reported to the Case Manager without delay.
  • Engaging with patients and families using effective communication techniques, ensuring ethical and respectful care, including maintaining confidentiality.
  • Ensuring patient safety and proper use of equipment (e.g., foot stools, side rails, oxygen).
  • Providing personal care services such as bathing, back rubs, oral hygiene, and changing bed linens as required.
  • Assisting patients with dressing and undressing as needed.
  • Planning and preparing nutritious meals, including grocery shopping, as assigned.
  • Aiding in feeding patients as required.
  • Measuring and recording vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure, as directed, with demonstrated competency.
  • Monitoring and caring for the patient's skin to prevent tissue breakdown.
  • Reporting any significant changes in the patient's condition to the Case Manager, while being mindful of the caregiver's dynamics.
  • Supporting patient mobility and exercise as instructed by the hospice nurse or therapist.
  • Facilitating normal range of motion and transfers/positioning as directed.
  • Assisting with self-administered medications as permitted by state regulations, such as reminders.
  • Providing assistance with bedpans and urinals, and light laundry tasks as assigned.
  • Performing range of motion exercises and other simple procedures as directed by the hospice nurse.
  • Offering respite care for patients and their families when on-site, as appropriate.
  • Maintaining cleanliness and orderliness in the patient's living space as assigned.
  • Adhering to the organization's documentation and care protocols, along with professional conduct standards.
  • Participating in quality assessment and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Being respectful of the patient and family environment, and attentive to the patient's personal needs.

LIMITATIONS OF THE ROLE:

The hospice aide will not engage in activities classified as nursing practice under the Nurse Practice Act. Specifically, the aide will not administer medications, take physician's orders, or perform procedures requiring the expertise of a licensed nurse, such as sterile techniques.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Fulfillment of state training requirements.
  • Completion of at least 75 hours of classroom and supervised practical training, with 16 hours of classroom instruction prior to a mandatory 16 hours of practical training.
  • Minimum age of 18 years.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and follow written instructions, as well as document care provided.
  • Understanding of hospice philosophy and comfort in providing specialized care to terminally ill patients.
  • Positive references from previous employers.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently, while being comfortable with issues surrounding death and dying.
  • Empathy for the needs of the ill, injured, frail, and impaired individuals.
  • Current CPR certification is required.
  • Demonstrated tact, patience, and good personal hygiene.
  • Valid driver's license and vehicle insurance that meets organizational requirements, with a vehicle in good working condition.
  • Successful completion of a probationary period to ensure competency in the aforementioned qualifications, documented by the supervisor and the employee.

Compensation:
$23.00 per hour
