Galt is strategically located in the heart of the Delta Recreation Area in Northern California, with easy access to the Sierra Foothills and the Sacramento Delta. Major attractions such as Reno, Lake Tahoe, San Francisco, and the California coast are all within a two-hour drive, making Galt a prime location for outdoor enthusiasts.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The City is in search of a Senior Civil Engineer.

In the event that qualified applicants for the Senior Civil Engineer role are not found, the department may consider candidates for the Associate Civil Engineer position.

Under general supervision, the Senior Civil Engineer will act as a project manager for intricate engineering tasks, which include environmental program planning and compliance, design, construction, land development engineering, traffic engineering, and water, wastewater, and stormwater management.

The role requires ensuring compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, and City policies associated with the Capital Improvement Program (CIP), land development, traffic and transportation, and utility infrastructure.

Additionally, the Senior Civil Engineer will provide expert assistance to departmental management and serve as a subject matter expert for other City Departments, performing related duties as necessary.


SUPERVISION
This position receives general direction from the Deputy Public Works Director and may oversee assigned staff.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This role represents the advanced journey-level for registered Professional Engineers in the civil engineering field. Incumbents are tasked with delivering professional-level support across various areas of expertise, requiring a high degree of independence, initiative, and discretion within established guidelines.

Examples of typical job functions include monitoring work unit activities, recommending improvements, preparing reports, participating in budget preparation, overseeing consultant proposals, and ensuring compliance with City standards and specifications.

Additional responsibilities include conducting planning activities, preparing designs and specifications for City infrastructure, analyzing civil engineering plans, and coordinating with contractors, developers, and the public.

Furthermore, the Senior Civil Engineer will manage design and construction projects, conduct engineering studies, prepare grant applications, and ensure adherence to applicable laws and ordinances.


QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge:

Candidates should possess a solid understanding of civil engineering principles, applicable laws, environmental impact assessment, and public works practices. Familiarity with municipal budget preparation, surveying techniques, and modern office technology is also essential.

Ability:
The ideal candidate must demonstrate the ability to conduct complex engineering research, supervise contractors, interpret technical documents, manage projects, and effectively communicate with various stakeholders.Education and Experience:
A typical qualification would include a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field, along with six years of professional experience in civil engineering, particularly in public works capital improvements.Licenses and Certifications:
A valid Class C California driver's license and a Professional Engineer registration in California are required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This role requires mobility to work in an office environment and inspect construction sites, including traversing uneven terrain. Candidates must possess the ability to lift and carry materials weighing up to 25 pounds.


WORKING CONDITIONS
Candidates must be able to pass a pre-employment physical and background investigation. The position may involve both office and fieldwork.
