ABOUT THE POSITION

The City is currently seeking a Civil Engineering Associate. This position may be filled at the Associate level if qualified Senior Civil Engineer applicants are not available.

Under general supervision, the incumbent will engage in a variety of professional engineering tasks related to the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of municipal infrastructure and programs. Responsibilities include land development, traffic engineering, and project management for various engineering activities. The role involves conducting studies, preparing reports, and collaborating with developers and contractors regarding infrastructure development.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

The position receives general supervision from the Deputy Public Works Director and does not supervise staff.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is a journey-level position in the professional engineering series, capable of performing a comprehensive range of engineering and project management tasks. Incumbents are expected to work independently, exercising judgment and initiative in their assignments.

EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Prepare designs, specifications, and reports for municipal infrastructure projects.
  • Review construction plans for compliance with City regulations.
  • Coordinate consultant requests for proposals and manage contract administration.
  • Assist in managing public works projects, ensuring compliance with contract specifications.
  • Conduct engineering studies and prepare reports for City Council consideration.
  • Respond to public inquiries and provide information regarding engineering processes.
  • Participate in capital improvement planning and preventive maintenance activities.
  • Prepare grant applications and manage grant agreements.
  • Monitor changes in laws and regulations affecting engineering practices.
  • Attend meetings and training sessions to stay updated on engineering trends.
QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:
  • Civil engineering principles and practices.
  • Construction methods and materials for public works projects.
  • Project management and contract administration.
  • Modern office practices and computer applications related to engineering.
Ability to:
  • Develop and review engineering plans.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports and presentations.
  • Make sound decisions within established guidelines.
  • Establish effective working relationships with stakeholders.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

A typical way to obtain the required qualifications includes a Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field, along with relevant professional experience in engineering design and project administration.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:

Possession of a valid California driver's license and registration as a Professional Engineer in California is required.
