ABOUT THE POSITION
The City is seeking a Senior Civil Engineer.
This role involves managing complex engineering projects, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, and overseeing design and construction activities. The successful candidate will work closely with various departments to ensure that all engineering functions align with applicable laws and City policies.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
The Senior Civil Engineer will receive general direction from the Deputy Public Works Director and will supervise assigned staff.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This advanced journey-level position requires a registered Professional Engineer in California. The incumbent will provide expert support to management in various engineering disciplines, exercising significant independence and discretion.
EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Monitor and evaluate the activities of the engineering unit, recommending improvements and preparing reports.
- Participate in budget preparation and maintain records of work performance.
- Oversee the development of consultant proposals and manage contract compliance.
- Conduct planning activities for capital improvement projects and ensure timely completion.
- Prepare designs and specifications for municipal infrastructure projects.
- Review and analyze civil engineering plans and provide recommendations.
- Engage with contractors, developers, and the public to coordinate engineering matters.
- Resolve issues with residents and other departments professionally.
- Manage public works projects to ensure compliance with contracts.
- Conduct studies and prepare reports for the City Council.
- Assist in the preparation of grant applications and manage grant agreements.
- Interpret and enforce applicable laws and regulations.
- Conduct inspections to ensure compliance with engineering standards.
- Prepare various written materials, including reports and correspondence.
- Stay updated on new trends in urban planning and public services.
- Manage specific engineering programs related to development and infrastructure.

A typical qualification includes a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field, along with six years of professional experience in civil engineering focused on public works.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
- Valid Class C California driver's license.
- Registered Professional Engineer in California.
Must possess mobility to work in an office setting and inspect construction sites, which may involve traversing uneven terrain.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical and background investigation. The position may require occasional fieldwork.
