About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Accounting Specialist to join our team at the Madison Metropolitan School District. As an Accounting Specialist, you will play a critical role in maintaining the financial records and chart of accounts of the District.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare and coordinate general journal adjustments to the district's financial ledger.
  • Review and reconcile procurement cards district-wide on a weekly basis.
  • Invoice buildings and departments on a monthly basis.
  • Invoice UW, MATC, and other third-party contractors.
  • Reconcile and invoice sub-reimbursements.
  • Assist accountants and school personnel in school activity fund bookkeeping.
  • Assist accountants with research, data collection, and compilation.
  • Prepare financial systems documentation.
  • Provide support for accounts receivable and receipting functions.
  • Prepare weekly deposits.
  • Provide support for the annual financial audit.
  • Assist accountants and budget analysts with research, data collection, and compilation.
Requirements
  • Associate's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Five or more years of bookkeeping experience, preferably in a large organization.
  • Basic knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) as applied to governmental units.
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Excel and its various applications.
  • Organizational skills, with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks, including communications with over 50 building-level administrative clerks.
  • Ability to navigate a complex general ledger chart of accounts.
  • Ability to timely process transactions in accordance with district guidelines and procedures.
  • Ability to perform under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and/or as a team and set priorities.
  • Ability to complete work with extreme accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Experience working cross-culturally and/or commitment to work toward improving one's own cultural competence.
Desired Qualifications
  • Tyler Munis Software experience or similar business software.
  • Experience in a school district or governmental entity setting.
