The role of the Medical Supply Technician is integral to the operations of the Sterile Processing Service within the Veterans Health Administration. This position involves handling critical and semi-critical reusable medical devices, ensuring they are properly cleaned, sterilized, and prepared for use in patient care.
QualificationsCitizenship: Candidates must be United States citizens. Non-citizens may only be considered when qualified citizens are unavailable, in accordance with VA Policy.
Experience: A minimum of one year of experience at the GS-5 level is required.
Specialized Experience: Relevant experience includes:
- Processing, assembling, troubleshooting, and sterilizing medical instruments.
- Knowledge of decontamination and cleaning procedures.
- Familiarity with aseptic techniques and operation of sterilization equipment.
Additionally, candidates should demonstrate:
- Knowledge of surgical instruments used in clinical settings.
- Understanding of universal precautions and safety measures.
- Proficiency in medical terminology, anatomy, and microbiology.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience with endoscope processing and certification from recognized sterile processing organizations is highly desirable.
Physical RequirementsThis position requires work in various environments, including decontamination and sterile supply areas. The role may involve:
- Working in varying temperatures and lighting conditions.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting of items up to 50 pounds.
- Use of personal protective equipment in potentially hazardous environments.
Employees must be prepared to handle bodily fluids and operate in noisy conditions due to equipment use.
Key ResponsibilitiesThe Medical Supply Technician will:
- Receive and disassemble contaminated medical devices.
- Determine appropriate cleaning methods based on manufacturer guidelines.
- Inspect and assemble items for sterilization, ensuring proper packaging.
- Document operational checks and maintain records for processes and equipment.
- Organize inventory and ensure proper stock rotation.
- Transport medical devices as required throughout the facility.
Additionally, the technician will maintain standards for sterile processing and may be required to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays based on operational needs.
