Position Title: Instructional Support Specialist, 1:1

Compensation: Pay Level 4 on Classified Salary Schedule

Job Overview:
Under the guidance of the site administrator and a certified educator, this role encompasses a variety of educational support activities, clerical tasks, and other related responsibilities as needed.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Individuals in this position may engage in a range of essential functions, including but not limited to:
  • Supporting instructional staff in delivering educational materials and facilitating learning exercises.
  • Providing one-on-one tutoring and assisting small groups of students to reinforce learning objectives.
  • Monitoring student engagement during practice and study sessions following instructional presentations.
  • Implementing positive behavior management strategies to assist in student conduct.
  • Preparing diverse instructional resources and educational aids.
  • Maintaining accurate records and files, including confidential student information.
  • Assisting students with the use of educational equipment.
  • Managing inventory of instructional materials and supplies.
  • Contributing to a well-organized and stimulating learning environment.
  • Overseeing recreational activities during breaks.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge Required:
Understanding of child development principles and behavioral characteristics;
Effective student behavior management techniques;
Proficient use of English, including grammar, punctuation, and spelling;
Basic mathematics skills;
Familiarity with record management systems and procedures.

Skills Required:
Ability to demonstrate a patient and understanding demeanor towards students of various ages and abilities;
Effective communication skills in both oral and written forms;
Competence in performing clerical tasks and operating educational and office equipment;
Capability to utilize diverse instructional materials to foster a positive learning atmosphere;
Ability to follow oral and written instructions;
Establishing and maintaining collaborative relationships with students and staff.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The physical demands of this position may include:
  • Regularly exerting 10 to 20 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • Primarily sitting, with occasional requirements for walking, running, or standing.
  • Ability to perceive sounds, maintain near and far vision, and utilize manual dexterity for operating equipment and handling materials.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and skills is acceptable.

Experience:
One year of paid or volunteer experience working with children across multiple age groups.

Education:
Completion of the twelfth grade or equivalent.
Successful completion of the aide proficiency examination is required.*
*Candidates for Title I funded schools must possess an Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree or equivalent, or 48 college semester units, or meet the State and Federal qualifications as outlined in the No Child Left Behind guidelines.

Conditions of Employment:
Must be insurable by the District's liability insurance provider. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of fingerprint and background checks, as well as proof of a recent negative tuberculosis test result.

Submission of a SUSD Classified Application.

PROOF OF NCLB COMPLIANCE:
Title I paraprofessionals whose responsibilities include instructional support must provide evidence of one of the following:
  • Completion of two years of college (48 semester units).
  • A.A. degree (or higher).
  • NCLB Certificate demonstrating successful completion of a CODESP approved examination.
