Job Overview:

The City of Modesto is seeking part-time Maintenance and Service Support Specialists to become integral members of our workforce. This role involves performing unskilled and semi-skilled labor as well as maintenance tasks.

Maintenance and Service Support Specialists will be assigned to different departments including Public Works, Utilities, Parks, Recreation, and Neighborhoods, as well as the Police Department. Responsibilities may vary across divisions such as parks, streets, community forestry, graffiti removal, building maintenance, and water operations.

This is an hourly role, limited to approximately 19 hours per week or a total of 1000 hours annually, whichever is reached first. This position does not include benefits and is classified as non-classified and at-will. Flexibility in scheduling is required, including the possibility of weekend, night, holiday, and split-shift assignments.

Key Responsibilities:
Essential functions may include, but are not limited to:
  • Cleaning and sanitizing facilities, including restrooms.
  • Loading and unloading supplies and materials.
  • Collaborating with maintenance teams across various city service areas.
  • Operating turf maintenance equipment such as large riding mowers and tractors.
  • Applying herbicides using both large and small sprayers.
  • Leading crews of non-paid laborers, including court referrals and youth program participants.
  • Using construction equipment like dump trucks and front loaders, as well as various power tools.
  • Maintaining and repairing public irrigation systems.
  • Removing litter and noxious weeds from city properties.
  • Building positive relationships with coworkers and the public, emphasizing excellent customer service.
  • Ensuring a safe working environment in accordance with established safety protocols.

Additional Responsibilities:
Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Knowledge:
Understanding of safe work practices and familiarity with tools, materials, and equipment used in general maintenance tasks.

Skills:
Ability to follow oral and written instructions, perform manual labor, and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Must be able to lift weights ranging from 75 to 100 lbs as needed and work in confined spaces.

Experience and Training:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is acceptable.

Education:
High School diploma or GED equivalency is required.

Licenses/Certificates:
Must possess a valid California driver's license.

Additional Requirements:
Applicants must be at least 18 years old at the time of application. Background checks may be required for certain assignments.

Physical and Mental Requirements:
Mobility: Frequent use of keyboard; sitting for extended periods; occasional bending or squatting.
Lifting: Frequently lifting up to 10 pounds; occasionally up to 25 pounds.
Vision: Constant overall vision; frequent reading and close-up work.
Dexterity: Frequent repetitive motions; writing; grasping and reaching.
Hearing/Talking: Frequent communication in person and over the phone.
Emotional/Psychological: Decision-making and concentration; public and coworker interaction.
Environmental: Frequent exposure to noise.

Working Conditions:
Work is typically performed in a temperature-controlled office environment with standard office noise. Some roles may require occasional overtime and weekend work.
