Job Title: Highway Maintenance Specialist

Join the State of Colorado team as a Highway Maintenance Specialist and contribute to the maintenance and upkeep of Colorado's roadways. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety and efficiency of our transportation infrastructure.

Job Summary:

The Highway Maintenance Specialist will perform a variety of tasks related to the maintenance and repair of roadways, including plowing snow, operating heavy equipment, and removing debris from roadways. This is a physically demanding job that requires working in all weather conditions and in close proximity to high-speed traffic.

Responsibilities:
  • Plow snow and ice from roadways
  • Operate heavy equipment, such as tandem dump trucks, loaders, and tractors
  • Remove debris from roadways, including rock, mud, and deceased animals
  • Remove debris from culverts, tunnels, and other infrastructure
  • Shovel gravel, sand, concrete, and asphalt
  • Dig ditches and perform other excavation tasks
  • Install and repair guardrail, highway markers, and signs
  • Filling potholes and roadway cracks
  • Setting out signs and cones for traffic control
  • Removing and covering graffiti
  • Installing pavement markings/striping
  • Stopping or slowing traffic in emergency situations
  • Maintaining equipment and performing minor repairs
  • Following safety guidance and wearing proper safety equipment
Requirements:
  • Must have at least two (2) years of physical labor and/or heavy equipment operation experience
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver's License Class A or B with no restriction on air brakes that allows operation within Colorado
  • Must pass a pre-employment screening which may include social security number trace, criminal records check, public court records check, educational records, and driving records checks
  • Must be willing to report to work during emergencies, including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed
  • Must be willing to live within thirty (30) minutes' driving time, under normal weather conditions, of where the work station and/or equipment is located
Working Conditions:

This is a physically demanding job that requires working in all weather conditions and in close proximity to high-speed traffic. The work environment includes exposure to loud noise, fumes, odors, gasses, dusts, etc. that may affect breathing, eyes, and skin. The job requires the use of personal protective equipment and the ability to work at heights of approximately 10'-20'.
