Position Overview

The Sustainable Energy Systems Engineer is tasked with applying standard engineering methodologies to design, analyze, maintain, and enhance products, components, or assemblies. This role focuses on evaluating and optimizing energy consumption in commercial facilities and relevant systems.


Key Responsibilities

  • Engage regularly with clients, contractors, and engineers to fulfill the essential duties of the role.
  • Analyze, develop, and assess systems for efficiency.
  • Enhance existing systems or initiate new projects.
  • Create and draft technical blueprints, conduct field visits, and oversee project management.
  • Utilize engineering techniques and analyses relevant to the assignment.

Energy Procurement and Analytics

  • Gather, organize, and scrutinize utility consumption data and rates.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of utility supply-side opportunities and procurement logistics.
  • Investigate potential utility energy efficiency rebate and incentive programs.
  • Monitor utility rate changes and deregulated energy cost trends.
  • Conduct energy benchmarks using tools such as EPA Energy Star.
  • Review utility invoices for discrepancies and work towards resolution.
  • Create utility budgets for effective financial planning.

Energy Auditing

  • Collect and analyze data from field surveys and utility information.
  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of existing buildings and their MEP systems.
  • Identify and assess opportunities for energy or cost reductions.
  • Prepare detailed technical reports on findings.

Measurement and Verification

  • Develop and implement Measurement and Verification Plans (M&V).
  • Establish energy consumption baselines through regression analysis and other methods.
  • Collaborate with clients and utility representatives during project stages to ensure effective M&V plans.
  • Review design documents and specifications to confirm compliance with M&V requirements.
  • Validate utility performance and verify savings achieved.

Remote Monitoring

  • Collect and evaluate energy, weather, and building automation data periodically.
  • Identify operational issues affecting energy consumption and comfort.
  • Provide recommendations to address identified operational challenges.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports for stakeholders summarizing findings.

Energy Modeling

  • Create engineering-based energy models to simulate building operations.
  • Collaborate with team members to explore potential improvements.
  • Conduct life cycle cost analyses and other economic evaluations.
  • Document engineering calculations and methodologies as required.

Other Responsibilities

  • Embrace Bernhard's advocacy philosophy and core values.
  • Perform assigned duties with minimal supervision in a collaborative environment.
  • Prepare technical reports and related documentation.
  • Mentor and train junior Energy Analysts as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering.
  • 3+ years of relevant experience.
  • Registered Professional Engineer.
  • Experience with energy savings initiatives and life cycle cost analyses.
  • Proficient in analyzing utility data and basic knowledge of commercial HVAC systems.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel and familiarity with other Microsoft applications.
  • Ability to handle moderately complex issues with general supervision.
  • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and technical skills.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple projects in a dynamic environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with energy modeling software and building automation systems.
  • Familiarity with energy efficiency programs and data analytics tools.
  • Relevant certifications through the Association of Energy Engineers or equivalent.

Travel Requirements

Occasional travel to job sites may be required.


Work Environment

This role may involve prolonged periods of sitting, as well as physical activities such as climbing stairs and adjusting objects up to 20 pounds.
