This position is part of the Metropolitan Council, the governing body for the seven-county Twin Cities metropolitan area. We are dedicated to planning for the future of our region and providing essential services in transportation, wastewater management, and housing.
Our Metro Transit Division is among the largest transit systems in the nation, employing over 3,000 individuals and facilitating ridership through a comprehensive network of buses, light rail, and commuter trains, while also supporting alternative transportation methods such as carpooling, vanpooling, walking, and biking.
ROLE OVERVIEWThe Fleet Service Engine/Transmission Supervisor plays a crucial role in diagnosing and analyzing mechanical failures. This position involves researching cutting-edge maintenance practices, offering technical support to service garages and the Overhaul Base, and collaborating with vendors and maintenance personnel to address fleet maintenance challenges.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES- Oversee the implementation of the most effective and advanced maintenance and repair techniques for engines and transmissions.
- Develop and document maintenance procedures and create job aids for mechanics, ensuring effective communication with Bus Maintenance staff.
- Provide on-the-job training and diagnostic support as necessary, utilizing advanced diagnostic tools and software.
- Thoroughly explain the functionality of power train systems to mechanics of varying skill levels.
- Prepare and analyze oil/fuel samples and reports to identify potential issues affecting equipment performance.
- Investigate chronic mechanical issues and collaborate with vendors and maintenance teams to devise long-term solutions.
- Monitor maintenance practices across facilities to ensure adherence to established procedures.
- Assume supervisory duties in the absence of the Service Garage Supervisor.
- Perform additional tasks as assigned.
Applicants must possess a combination of experience in automotive or heavy-duty vehicle maintenance, along with education in Diesel Mechanics, Automotive Service Technology, Heavy Equipment Technology, or a related field, including at least one year of supervisory or leadership experience:
- High school diploma/GED with eight years of relevant experience, including one year in a supervisory role.
- Associate's degree with six years of experience, including one year in a supervisory role.
- Bachelor's degree or higher with four years of experience, including one year in a supervisory role.
Experience in writing technical procedures and service bulletins, familiarity with union contracts, and experience in training delivery in both classroom and practical settings are advantageous. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications is also beneficial.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIESWithin the first six months, candidates should have a working knowledge of diesel engines, automatic transmission systems, HVAC, hydraulics, and electrical systems. Strong analytical skills for diagnosing malfunctions in various equipment types are essential, along with effective communication skills and the ability to provide training and support to maintenance personnel.
WORK ENVIRONMENTThis role may involve occasional outdoor work and local travel to various facilities. Employees will be exposed to various environmental conditions, including noise, moving parts, and potentially hazardous materials.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTSThe position requires the ability to communicate effectively, perform manual tasks, and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds. Candidates should be prepared for a dynamic work environment that may require physical agility.
