Unit Mission Statement: The Marine Operations Department is committed to ensuring safe access to marine environments while addressing the needs of users.
Position Overview: The Relief Research Vessel Chief Mate is responsible for serving as Chief Mate on the R/V Virginia, ensuring adherence to maritime regulations and institutional policies. Key responsibilities include managing vessel operations, supervising maintenance tasks, and facilitating scientific objectives.
- Safely operates the R/V Virginia and oversees vessel navigation.
- Manages the upkeep of deck and safety apparatus.
- Engages in vessel readiness and sampling initiatives.
- Collaborates with scientific teams to achieve mission objectives.
- Assists in maintaining vessel cleanliness and functionality.
Employment Conditions: This role is classified as non-exempt and may require overtime and after-hours commitments.
- A valid driver's license is required.
Essential Qualifications:
- Possession of a 500 ton or greater near-coastal Mates license.
- Valid TWIC and STCW certifications.
- Radar endorsement is necessary.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Strong communication abilities.
Desirable Qualifications:
- 1600 ton Master near-coastal license.
- Bachelor's degree in a marine-related discipline.
- Experience aboard research vessels or within the fishing sector.
Remote Work Eligibility: This position is not eligible for remote work.
Compensation Range: Up to $38.00 per hour
University Salary Classification: U09
