Job Summary:

Under the direct supervision of a physician, optometrist, and/or Department Administrator, performs a variety of standard diagnostic tests of the eye, following established procedures and policies as an aid in the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases and visual disorders.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conducts visual acuity assessments prior to administering any test or performing any photography.
  • Assists physicians in explaining testing procedures, side effects, and follow-up care to patients.
  • Performs visual field testing using automated central and peripheral fields, tangent screens, and Goldman perimetry.
  • Verifies lens prescriptions as needed prior to testing and documents findings.
  • Conducts keratometry measurements, interferometry, lensometry, and tonometry as required.
  • Performs accurate ultrasound Ascan measurements and IOL calculations for cataract surgery and lens implantation, and conducts Bscan diagnostic exams to detect ocular abnormalities or foreign bodies.
  • Must possess knowledge of photographic techniques to perform the following:
  • Fluorescein angiography in proper sequence and in stereo and color fundus photos in stereo.
  • Iris angiography in proper sequence.
  • Photographs the anterior chamber of the eye using a slit lamp, including the conjunctiva, cornea, iris, and lens.
  • Photographs the external anatomy of the eye or facial portions using microphotography with a 35mm camera or Polaroid camera.
  • Photographs conjunctiva and corneal abnormalities using a corneascope camera and/or corneal topography.
  • Photographs during ocular surgery as needed.
  • Must have experience with digital photography and transferring data to CDs.
  • Must have knowledge of basic functions of a 35mm camera and its variable settings and capabilities of a Polaroid camera.
  • Must have knowledge of most common film types, including black and white, color negative print, color slide, Polaroids black/white, color, and sensitivity rating for each.
  • Must have knowledge of darkroom techniques, including processing and printing of film by manual method if digital camera not functioning, and to perform processing if needed.
  • Evaluates patients' conditions by observing signs, symptoms, and reactions to testing procedures, and reports to RN and physician any unusual reactions.
  • Has basic computer skills.
  • Maintains an organized filing system of all diagnostic photography and testing reports.
  • Maintains a clean and organized work area, and replaces expendable supplies as needed.
  • Performs any other duties necessary to help in the smooth operation of the department as a whole.
  • Establishes and maintains courteous, cooperative relations with the public, patients, and other personnel.
  • Performs other duties as required.
  • Promotes, ensures, and improves customer service to internal/external customers by demonstrating skills consistent with the organization's philosophy of providing extraordinary customer relations and quality service.

Ophthalmic Technician Certificate from The Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology OR Ophthalmic Assistant Certificate from The Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology

  • JCAPHO certification preferred.
