Job Description

Overview:

The Texas General Land Office is seeking a highly skilled Environmental Attorney III-IV to join our Office of General Counsel department. As a senior legal counsel, you will play a critical role in advising client divisions on complex legal issues related to coastal resource management, submerged land, boundary law, and other matters that impact our mission and functions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Advise client divisions on legal issues related to coastal resource management, submerged land, boundary law, and other matters.
  • Represent client divisions in an effective manner by responding to their needs promptly and staying up-to-date on relevant legal issues.
  • Prepare or oversee the preparation of legal opinions and memoranda, contracts, proposals, and other legal documents.
  • Review and analyze proposed bills, rules, and regulations affecting agency operations and administration.
  • Assist the Attorney General's office or outside counsel in the representation of the agency in civil actions.
  • Work with client divisions to implement procedures mandated by legislation.

Requirements:

  • Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor (JD) degree.
  • Licensed as an attorney by the State of Texas.
  • Member in good standing with the State Bar of Texas.
  • Attorney III - Two (2) years of full-time experience as a licensed attorney in the State of Texas with an emphasis in environmental law.
  • Attorney IV - Three (3) years of full-time experience as a licensed attorney in the State of Texas with an emphasis in environmental law.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Five (5) years of full-time experience as a licensed attorney in the State of Texas.
  • Significant prior experience with environmental and natural resources law and Texas real estate law.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of legal principles, practices, and proceedings.
  • Skills in legal research, writing, and analysis.
  • Ability to conduct hearings, prepare opinions and briefs, and communicate effectively.

Physical Requirements:

This position requires the employee to primarily perform sedentary office work, with mobility required to carry out some duties.
