About the Job

The U.S. Department of the Treasury is seeking a highly skilled Taxpayer Services Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our team, you will play a critical role in providing exceptional service to taxpayers, ensuring compliance with tax laws and regulations, and promoting a culture of excellence within our organization.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide technical assistance and advice to taxpayers on individual income, excise, and employment taxes, as well as other tax-related matters.
  • Conduct interviews with taxpayers to determine their tax situation, provide guidance, and explain the consequences of various courses of action.
  • Discuss tax law implications with tax practitioners and accountants, review financial records to understand taxpayer financial status, and confer with taxpayers and/or their representatives to explain tax law issues.
  • Assist taxpayers in preparing tax returns, explain the collection and examination processes, and prepare tax returns that include referring to required documentation.
Requirements
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National and provide proof of U.S. Citizenship.
  • Undergo a review of prior performance/conduct and an income tax verification.
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation, including a FBI criminal history record check.
  • Complete a suitability determination at the time requested by the agency.
  • Go through a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) process that requires two forms of identification from the Federal government.
  • If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System or are exempt from having to do so.
  • Have your salary sent to a financial institution of your choice by Direct Deposit/Electronic Funds Transfer.
Qualifications

Federal experience is not required. The experience may have been gained in the public sector, private sector, or One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. To ensure full credit for your work experience, please indicate dates of employment by month/year, and indicate number of hours worked per week, on your resume.

You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement:

  • GENERAL EXPERIENCE FOR GS-05: You must have three years of general experience one year of which was at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-04 in the Federal Service.
  • OR EDUCATION: You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows: 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • OR COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: You may qualify by a combination of experience and education.
