Nutrition Services Assistant Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Nutrition Services Assistant to join our team at Iowa City Community School District. As a key member of our food service team, you will play a vital role in ensuring the health and well-being of our students by preparing and serving nutritious meals.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the preparation of soups, casseroles, meats, vegetables, desserts, and other food items in large quantities.
  • Help with serving, cashiering, kitchen clean-up, and the cleaning of silverware, dishes, pans, trays, and equipment.
  • Recognize properly prepared food items by temperature, sight, taste, and smell.
  • Operate quantity food service production equipment, including convection or conventional ovens, griddles, steamers, steam kettles, slicers, mixers, dish machines, and other equipment.
  • Follow established sanitation guidelines for both food preparation and clean-up.
  • Count accurately and perform simple math, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Requirements:
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time and walk much of the time during the day.
  • Must be able to tolerate hot and humid conditions.
  • Must be able to lift up to 45 lbs.
  • Must have manual dexterity to handle knives and other pieces of equipment.
  • Is able to work calmly and complete jobs in a timely manner, even under sometimes stressful conditions.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Previous bookkeeping or accounting experience helpful.
  • Must be able to read, write, add, and subtract.
  • Able to work well with others (building staff and students).
  • Maintains high standards of personal hygiene and job performance.
  • Is honest and dependable and is discreet in regard to information concerning school children and staff.
Working Conditions:

This position requires working in a warm, noisy environment with the ability to tolerate hot and humid conditions. The successful candidate must be able to lift up to 45 lbs and have manual dexterity to handle knives and other pieces of equipment.
