Currently, we operate 53 schools across five cities, serving more than 20,000 students. Our graduates are significantly more likely to enroll in and complete college compared to their peers nationwide, thanks to our commitment to strong academic, co-curricular, and social-emotional learning.

North Star Academy, part of our network, manages fourteen schools in Newark, NJ, catering to students from kindergarten through 12th grade. We prioritize authentic relationships between educators and students, supported by effective systems and an engaging instructional model that fosters both academic and personal growth.

Our educators are experts in their subject matter and excel at motivating and inspiring high school learners. Central to our English curriculum is a focus on reading and student-led discussions. You will employ diverse instructional strategies to foster dialogue, ignite a love for literature, and empower students to express their voices and agency. By the end of each academic year, students will be well-equipped for the challenges of college coursework and will have developed a lasting appreciation for literacy.

Key Responsibilities

1. Instructional Duties
  • Deliver a comprehensive literature curriculum that emphasizes inclusive texts, diversity, and readiness for Advanced Placement (AP), SAT, and college-level coursework.
  • Guide students through in-depth analyses of literature by authors such as James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, F. Scott Fitzgerald, William Shakespeare, and Yaa Gyasi, fostering a passion for reading and critical thinking.
  • Enhance students' independent and collaborative reading, writing, and discussion abilities.
  • Facilitate student-led discussions, teaching students to substantiate their claims with evidence and to critically evaluate arguments and rhetoric.
  • Regularly assess student comprehension and writing, adapting lessons to optimize learning outcomes.
  • Collaborate with your department and grade-level team to develop content and instructional strategies that support student success.
2. Data-Driven Analysis
  • Engage in weekly meetings with your principal and/or instructional coach to analyze student work and assessment trends.
  • Implement strategies to differentiate instruction for diverse learners in your classroom.
3. Cultivating School Culture
  • Establish positive relationships with students to ensure they feel valued and heard.
  • Collaborate with families to provide necessary resources that support their child's educational journey.
  • Participate in professional development, mentorship, and coaching sessions focused on best practices.
  • Engage in weekly school-wide meetings to foster community, model core values, and promote student achievement.
  • Work with your grade-level team to set academic goals and refine instructional strategies.
Qualifications
  • A strong commitment to the mission of Uncommon Schools and a dedication to anti-racist practices.
  • A proven track record of supporting students' social-emotional and academic growth.
  • A collaborative spirit, eager to work with internal and external partners for the benefit of students.
  • A self-motivated learner who actively seeks and applies feedback to enhance performance.
  • Required Experience:
    • A demonstrated interest in making a positive impact on K-12 students in urban settings (1-2 years of experience preferred).
    • Academic expertise in Humanities, English, Social Sciences, or related fields.
    • A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is required prior to employment. Teacher certification is not mandatory for consideration in NJ, but candidates must meet state certification eligibility requirements.
