We are seeking a highly skilled Certified Surgical Technologist to join our team at Northwell Health. As a key member of our surgical team, you will be responsible for implementing and communicating the age-specific plan of care, ensuring aseptic technique, and maintaining a sterile field.
Responsibilities- Participate in turnover activities and room setup for each surgical procedure, including connection of suction, electrical cords, power cables, and electrocautery.
- Assist with ensuring adequate supply of stock for patient care.
- Monitor each case to ensure all infection control measures are met and all sterilization standards are adhered to.
- Establish and maintain a sterile field and monitor the aseptic technique of the surgical team.
- Document accordingly and take corrective action as necessary.
- Adhere to and monitor principles of aseptic techniques in the clinical environment, including use of sterile instruments and supplies.
- Follow procedure for decontaminating of all instruments used during the procedure and assist with instrument processing and sterilization.
- Maintain environmental controls and take appropriate precautions regarding waste disposal.
- Perform sponge, sharp, and instrument counts with the RN according to policy.
- Take appropriate action when counts are incorrect.
- Ensure appropriate and safe use of equipment and instrumentation prior, during, and post-operatively.
- Second assist as needed under the direction of the surgeon.
- Correctly hold retractors as prescribed by the supervising physician.
- Anticipate the need for surgical equipment and supplies and secure same.
- Check and or troubleshoot equipment for proper functioning prior to use and remove malfunctioning equipment for repair.
- Assist surgeon with patient care procedures, including proper labeling of all specimens from surgical field, tapping mallet, and cutting suture (licensed personnel only).
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Minimum of one (1) year experience as a Surgical Technologist or in a clinical setting (for LPNs), required.
- Successful completion from a nationally accredited educational program for surgical technologist, and holds and maintains a certified surgical technologist (CST) credential administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA), required.
- OR (meets one for the following)
- Completed an appropriate training program for surgical technology in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or Public Health Service Commissioned Corps;
- Provides evidence that the person was employed as a surgical technologist in a healthcare facility for a cumulative period of one year, occurring within the four years immediately prior to January 1, 2015;
- In the service of the federal government, to the extent the person is performing duties related to that of a surgical tech.
- Must be and remain in good standing with NYS regulations, required.
- Ability to function effectively in emergency situations.
