Healthcare Support Specialist

Position Summary:
The Healthcare Support Specialist plays a crucial role in assisting medical professionals and nursing staff in providing direct patient care. This position reports to the Charge Nurse and/or Nursing Shift Supervisor.
Key Responsibilities:
- Monitor and record vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, respiration, and temperature as instructed.
- Assist with patient admissions, including bed assignments, personal belongings search, unit orientation, and identification procedures.
- Support laboratory specimen collection and processing, including phlebotomy tasks.
- Provide assistance to physicians during patient examinations as needed.
- Support detoxification patients with daily living activities such as eating, bathing, and mobility.
- Assist with treatment procedures, including the application of cold packs, heating pads, and basic bandaging.
- Collaborate with the Director of Nursing or designee in managing inventory and ordering supplies.
- Document all activities in clinical records following established policies and procedures.
- Participate in team meetings and shift reports as required.
- Address inquiries from patients, families, and visitors regarding program guidelines and services.
- Act as a First Responder during emergency management drills and alarms.
- Assist in urgent medical triage, including First Aid and CPR as directed.
- Communicate effectively with clinical, support, and administrative staff to ensure seamless patient care.
- Provide therapeutic responses to patients in crisis, referring to nursing and counseling staff as necessary.
- Maintain a welcoming, safe, and healing environment for patients and families throughout their care journey.
- Suggest improvements for service quality and delivery.
- Uphold confidentiality regarding company and patient information.
- Adapt positively to changes in the work environment.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED is required.
- At least one year of experience in a healthcare setting is required; experience in behavioral healthcare is preferred.
- Phlebotomy skills or willingness to be trained.
- Intermediate computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- Ability to quickly learn and utilize various medical and clinical software.
- Familiarity with addiction and withdrawal symptoms is preferred.
- Strong interpersonal skills to provide calm and supportive responses to individuals in crisis.
- Problem-solving and analytical skills are essential.
- Excellent organizational abilities to adapt to changing patient needs in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to make informed decisions in complex situations while recognizing when to seek assistance.
- Cultural sensitivity and openness to diverse patient experiences are necessary.
- Knowledge of cultural, age, and population-specific characteristics relevant to patient care.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team and provide guidance and training to others.
- Ability to de-escalate crises calmly and professionally.
- If in recovery, two years of verifiable abstinence is required; active participation in a twelve-step program is preferred.
Work Environment:
- This position involves working in a campus setting with outdoor movement between buildings and requires adherence to safety precautions.
- Frequent interaction with individuals in crisis, necessitating additional safety measures.
- May require performing CPR/First Aid as needed; certification or eligibility is required.
- Position may involve long hours and varying shifts, including weekends and overnight stays during inclement weather.
- Physical requirements include the ability to lift up to 30 lbs and push/pull up to 100 lbs, as well as navigate uneven terrain.
- Must possess the ability to perform various physical activities, including walking, standing, and using fine/gross motor skills.
