Job Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Postdoctoral Researcher to join our team at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting research in metabolic engineering and synthetic microbiology, with a focus on developing technology for microbial-based consolidated bioprocess of plastic.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct research in metabolic engineering and synthetic microbiology to develop technology for microbial-based consolidated bioprocess of plastic
- Optimize plastic-hydrolyzing pathways and metabolic engineering to improve new pathways and genes for the production of high-value chemicals from mixed plastic
- Scale up activities in bioreactor cultivations and improve strain performance
- Teach selected lectures in biotechnology/molecular biology courses and mentor students
- Engage in outreach activities and contribute to the development of novel genetic tools
Requirements
- PhD in a relevant field (e.g. microbiology, biochemistry, chemical engineering)
- Experience with systems biology methods, including multi-omics analysis (RNA-seq, proteomics, and metabolomics)
- Research experience in metabolic engineering and synthetic biology in non-model bacteria
- Proactive in setting direction and goals for assigned tasks
- Troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Strong record of quality peer-reviewed publications
- Strong safety record and demonstrated ability to adhere to complex standard operating procedures with attention to detail
Preferred Qualifications
- Development and implementation of novel genetic tools
- Experience with NGS sequencing, bioinformatics, and programming (Python)
- Development and deployment of CRISPR-based applications
- Experience with engineering and cultivation of bacteria
- Experience in bioreactor cultivation
- Basic analytical skills including HPLC, GC, LC-MS
