Hiring Range:

$7500 per four or five unit course; $1875 per one unit course. (ELSJ 9 is a one unit course.)

Purpose:

The Office of Undergraduate Studies at Santa Clara University seeks applicants for the position of Quarterly Adjunct Lecturer (part-time) to teach one or more sections of the following one-unit course: Fall Quarter: ELSJ Milestone: Post-immersion Reflection and Analysis (ELSJ 9). Additional courses may become available during the year. Specific assignments will be made according to the individual and programmatic need. The successful candidate will teach this course online. Each quarter is 10 weeks long, with an 11th week set for final examinations. Each course is worth.25 of a course, with a maximum annual teaching load of 4.0.

Course Description:

Fall Quarter: ELSJ 9: Enrolled students will participate in a pre-approved Ignatian Center immersion in advance of the course. Coursework will allow students to reflect on the immersion experience and explore what it means to live in solidarity with our local and global community. Students will strengthen their ability to work sensitively and respectfully with communities that are socially, economically, and/or politically marginalized or oppressed. Course assignments include critical reflections and an academic research paper. Enrollment by permission only. Permission must be granted by the Assessment Manager for Undergraduate Studies in advance of beginning the immersion experience.

Required Qualifications:
  1. Ph.D. or ABD in Social Sciences, Humanities, or Theology [or a closely related field if the candidate also has a high level of practical/applied work experience directly pertinent to the core themes of the course].
  2. Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the college level.
  3. Demonstrated expertise in the specific topics covered in this course.
  4. Excellent communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:

Experience and/or familiarity with community-based learning/service learning pedagogy.

Responsibilities:

Teaching duties include but are not limited to:

  1. Teaching the assigned course(s), but no more than two courses in any one quarter and not more than four courses over the academic year.
  2. Fulfilling all responsibilities associated with assigned courses, including
    1. Conducting all assigned class meetings and individual conferences with students in a timely and prepared manner that demonstrates a command of the discipline and skill in presenting it effectively in an online modality;
    2. Assigning and evaluating written work that aligns the course description and with course learning outcomes, and providing timely feedback to students;
    3. Holding weekly office hours on campus;
    4. Submitting student grades that are appropriate, accurate, and fair measures of student performance to the Office of the Registrar by the designated deadline;
    5. Administering numerical and narrative evaluations approved by the Chair of the Department for each course taught;
    6. Where applicable, teaching from an approved syllabus for the University Core courses or working with the Chair to design an appropriate syllabus for submission for approval from the relevant Faculty Core Curriculum Committee.
