Position Overview:

The Marathon Carson California Refinery is seeking a Chemical Engineer specializing in Process Controls. This role involves providing technical support for DCS, SCADA, PLC, and HMI automation systems. The selected candidate will be responsible for programming and maintaining control logic, HMI interfaces, alarms, and various control engineering applications. This position will work closely with Operations and other teams to enhance control system reliability and optimize plant assets.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop complex regulatory control logic to achieve operational and economic goals.
  • Create and update Cause and Effect diagrams along with detailed control system documentation.
  • Implement HMI best practices for control system graphics.
  • Commission new control system hardware and I/O for various projects.
  • Engage in alarm management initiatives to improve system performance.
  • Oversee data reporting through control system historian and PI interfaces, including PI Vision displays.
  • Establish DCS communication interfaces for systems such as Vapor Recovery and Burner Management.
  • Comprehend process hazard lifecycle and functional safety applications.
  • Review and annotate P&IDs, loop drawings, and logic schematics.
  • Support and lead Process Safety Management activities, including Management of Change and HAZOP studies.
  • Conduct troubleshooting and incident investigations as necessary.
  • Facilitate communication protocols such as Modbus, OPC, DeviceNet, and DSA.
  • Collaborate with OT and Cyber Security teams to ensure network system reliability and security.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • A degree in Chemical Engineering is required.
  • At least 5 years of experience in Process Controls or Process Engineering within a refinery or related heavy industry is essential.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook is necessary.
  • Ability to wear appropriate PPE and perform field tasks is required.
  • A valid driver's license is mandatory.
  • Legal authorization to work in the US without future VISA sponsorship is required.
  • Travel requirements are minimal, at 5% or less.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Over 7 years of industry experience in Process Automation and Control, SCADA, I&E, PLC, and SIS is preferred.
  • Experience in HMI Design and Development is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with Honeywell DCS systems is a plus.
  • Experience programming PLC controllers such as Allen Bradley and Schneider Tricon is desirable.
