Veterinary Medicine Leader and Animal Resources Director

Job Summary

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a highly qualified Attending Veterinarian and Director of Animal Resources and Care Division to join our team. As a key member of our senior leadership team, you will provide leadership and oversight of our animal resources program, ensuring the highest quality of care and compliance with regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership as the university's Attending Veterinarian, ensuring the health and well-being of animals in our care.
  • Lead the Animal Resources and Care Division, overseeing daily operations and management of our animal facilities.
  • Serve as an ex officio voting member of the Virginia Tech Institutional Animal Care Committee (IACUC), providing veterinary oversight and guidance.
  • Provide high-quality veterinary care and animal welfare across the program, working closely with the Institutional Official, IACUC, and other stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with university leadership, faculty, and staff to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and maintain the highest standards of animal care.

Requirements

  • Veterinary medical degree from an AVMA accredited veterinary college or ECFVG certification.
  • Veterinary licensure in at least one of the United States.
  • Experience with the supervision, development, and performance management of veterinary and other professional staff.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills.
  • Licensure in Virginia is expected within 12 months of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Significant relevant experience in managing a laboratory animal resources program.
  • Prior experience working as a veterinarian in a university environment.
  • ACLAM diplomate status.
  • Significant knowledge of the regulatory and compliance environment.
  • Previous IACUC experience.
  • Familiarity with the AAALAC accreditation process.
  • Familiarity with a wide-range of large and small animal species.
  • Familiarity with managing operations in an ABSL3 facility.
  • Demonstrated success in working as part of a team and with diverse populations.
