Surgical Pathology Specialist

Position Overview:
The Anatomical Pathology Assistant at Cayuga Health System plays a vital role in the anatomical pathology department, focusing on the preparation, dissection, and processing of anatomic pathology specimens. This position is integral to the intraoperative consultations, gross room upkeep, and overall specimen management.

Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure accurate specimen identification, accessioning, and requisitioning while maintaining specimen integrity throughout the entire process.
- Uphold a compliant environment by adhering to all laboratory and hospital protocols, as well as New York State and Joint Commission regulations, HIPAA standards, and infection control guidelines.
- Provide detailed descriptions of gross anatomic features of surgical specimens, ensuring logical and factual reporting.
- Load cassettes into the tissue processor using the appropriate programs, maintaining an organized workflow.
Qualifications:
Education:
A graduate of a NAACLS accredited Pathologists' Assistant training program or a Bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory science, medical technology, or a related field, with relevant experience in surgical pathology, gross dissection, and frozen sections.
Continuing education is essential; candidates should acquire a minimum of 12 hours of professional development annually.
Licensure:
Must possess a valid NYS Pathologist Assistant license.
Preferred Skills:
Strong problem-solving abilities and meticulous attention to detail are highly valued. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are preferred, along with the capacity to prioritize tasks and adapt to varying workloads.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand for extended periods and perform manual tasks requiring dexterity and coordination. Capable of lifting light loads, up to 40 pounds.
