The Anatomical Pathology Specialist plays a crucial role in the anatomical pathology department, engaging in the preparation, dissection, and processing of pathology specimens. Key responsibilities include conducting intraoperative consultations, maintaining the gross room, and managing specimen tasks. This position also involves performing postmortem examinations, including organ dissection and evisceration.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure accurate specimen identification, accessioning, and requisitioning while maintaining specimen integrity throughout the workflow.
  • Uphold a compliant environment by adhering to all laboratory and hospital protocols, as well as state and federal regulations, including HIPAA standards and safety guidelines.
  • Provide detailed descriptions of gross anatomical features of surgical specimens, ensuring clarity and factual accuracy.
  • Operate tissue processors effectively, loading cassettes using the appropriate programs.
  • Manage inventory levels and complete all necessary checklists, troubleshooting any temperature discrepancies as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Completion of a NAACLS accredited Pathologists' Assistant training program or a Bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory science, medical technology, or a related field, along with relevant experience in surgical pathology and gross dissection.
  • Maintain professional knowledge through ongoing education, with a minimum of 12 hours of continuing education annually.
  • Licensure: Valid New York State Pathologist Assistant license.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage time efficiently, and adapt to changing workloads.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand for extended periods; manual dexterity and good eye-hand coordination are essential. Capable of performing light lifting, up to 40 pounds.
