Position Overview:
The Anatomical Pathology Assistant plays a vital role within the anatomical pathology department at Cayuga Health System, a leading healthcare provider dedicated to enhancing community well-being through integrated health services.

This position involves the meticulous preparation, dissection, and processing of anatomic pathology specimens. The assistant will also engage in intraoperative consultations, maintain the gross room, and manage specimen-related tasks. Additionally, responsibilities include conducting postmortem examinations, which encompass organ evisceration and dissection.



Key Responsibilities:
  • Ensure accurate specimen identification, accessioning, and requisitioning, while maintaining specimen integrity throughout all processes.
  • Uphold compliance with laboratory and hospital protocols, including adherence to New York State and Joint Commission regulations, HIPAA standards, and infection control guidelines.
  • Provide detailed descriptions of gross anatomic features of surgical specimens, ensuring clarity and factual accuracy.
  • Load cassettes into the tissue processor using the appropriate programs.
  • Maintain adequate inventory levels and complete all necessary checklists, troubleshooting any temperature irregularities as needed.


Qualifications:
Education:

Applicants must possess a degree from a NAACLS accredited Pathologists' Assistant training program or a Bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory science, medical technology, or a related field, accompanied by relevant experience in surgical pathology, gross dissection, and frozen sections.

Continuing education is essential; candidates should aim to acquire a minimum of 12 hours annually to maintain professional and technical knowledge.


Licensure:
New York State Pathologist Assistant license is required.

Preferred Skills:
Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail are highly valued. Effective written and verbal communication skills are preferred, along with the capacity to prioritize tasks and adapt to varying workloads.

Physical Requirements:
Candidates must be able to stand for extended periods, demonstrate manual dexterity, and possess good eye-hand coordination. The role may require light lifting, up to 40 pounds.
