Job Overview
Scope:
This role is pivotal in facilitating school enrollment for newly arrived children. It serves as a vital connection among resettlement organizations, educational institutions, and refugee families, ensuring that schools are equipped to support students and their families effectively. The position reports to the Parent/Student Coordinator.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage the preparation, enrollment, and documentation processes for newly arrived students in local public schools within a specified timeframe. This includes assisting families who have relocated or have children entering Kindergarten.
- Conduct orientation sessions for newly arrived students and their families, providing essential information about the American educational system to promote successful integration and adjustment.
- Facilitate communication and meetings between school staff and parents, including organizing school orientation events, parent-teacher conferences, and open houses, while coordinating logistics for interpretation and transportation as needed.
- Organize team meetings for students facing specific adjustment challenges, ensuring collaboration among school personnel, parents, and other stakeholders to deliver comprehensive support.
- Engage with schools to raise awareness about available refugee resettlement services, offering or arranging cultural orientations as necessary.
- Collaborate with the Youth Education team on activities for youth, including social events and workshops addressing topics such as responsible citizenship, college readiness, and healthy relationships, while encouraging youth to voice their educational needs.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- A High School Diploma is required; a Bachelor's degree is preferred along with two years of experience working with refugees, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience in providing direct family support services, mediation skills, and familiarity with public education systems.
- Strong organizational and computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Fluency in English, with bilingual capabilities preferred.
- Cultural sensitivity and effective cross-cultural communication skills.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time efficiently.
- Capacity to communicate effectively and collaborate as a team member in a diverse environment.
- A valid driver's license, active insurance policy, and access to reliable transportation are required.
