Position Overview

Title: Head of Counseling and Crisis Support Services (Full-Time)

Department: Domestic Violence Support Services

Reports to: Senior Director of Domestic Violence Services

FLSA Status: Exempt

Salary: $80,000

About Shelter House:

Shelter House has been a pivotal organization since its establishment in 1981, responding to the homelessness crisis in Fairfax County. Our commitment to evolving alongside community needs has allowed us to partner effectively with government entities, private organizations, and community members. Currently, we employ over 100 dedicated individuals focused on combating homelessness and domestic violence, positively impacting nearly 2,000 lives annually, including many children.

Organizational Culture: Our culture is rooted in our Core Values of Inclusivity, Collaboration, Accountability, Respect, and Empowerment (iC.A.R.E.). We prioritize work-life balance and offer comprehensive benefits, including a 401K plan with employer matching and significant contributions towards medical, dental, and vision premiums for full-time staff.

Role Responsibilities:

The Head of Counseling and Crisis Support Services will oversee both the hotline and counseling initiatives. This role involves training and supervising the counseling team, which provides individual and group therapy to adult survivors of domestic and sexual violence, as well as children affected by these issues in community housing programs.

Additionally, the Director will manage the hotline service, which assesses eligibility for shelter access. Individuals seeking assistance through our programs often come from backgrounds of severe trauma, including domestic violence and human trafficking. The hotline staff are tasked with conducting thorough, trauma-informed evaluations to facilitate shelter entry.

Both teams operate under a strengths-based model that emphasizes understanding trauma's effects and ensuring the safety of clients—physically, psychologically, and emotionally.

Key Contributions:

  • Ensure that services provided are trauma-informed and culturally sensitive for adult survivors of domestic and sexual violence.
  • Offer guidance and training on best practices and operational procedures.
  • Stay informed about best practices related to domestic violence and trauma responses.
  • Build and maintain partnerships with community-based organizations.
  • Develop and oversee systems for maintaining records in compliance with company policies and relevant regulations.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to ensure timely service delivery to clients.
  • Represent the hotline and counseling programs to community partners.
  • Demonstrate Shelter House's core values: collaboration, accountability, respect, and empowerment.
  • Utilize Microsoft applications effectively in daily operations.
  • Perform additional duties as required for optimal program functioning.

Counseling Program Duties:

  • Provide clinical supervision and support to the Counseling Program Manager.
  • Coordinate care and consult with the case management team to enhance client engagement in housing planning.
  • Assist in making referrals to long-term mental health services as necessary.
  • Maintain required licensure and credentials for independent clinical service provision.

Hotline Program Duties:

  • Oversee the hotline program and collaborate with the Director of Data Analytics to ensure accurate data tracking and reporting.
  • Ensure that hotline calls are answered with empathy and in line with best practices.
  • Provide ongoing training and support to hotline staff, ensuring they are well-informed about standards and best practices.
  • Supervise the Hotline Program Manager and work together to assess hotline operations.
  • Review hotline calls to ensure adherence to best practices.
  • Offer backup support to the hotline when necessary.
  • Foster relationships with community partners.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Ability to uphold professional ethics and maintain client confidentiality.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Capacity to prioritize multiple tasks and make informed decisions.
  • Ability to complete tasks amidst frequent interruptions.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Valid Driver's License and reliable transportation.
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Preferred:

  • Licensed in Virginia as an LCSW, LCP, or LMFT, with the ability to provide clinical supervision.
  • Experience working with individuals and families, utilizing various therapeutic modalities.
  • Experience with trauma survivors, particularly victims of domestic violence.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.

Physical Requirements:

  • Annual TB Test is required.
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift items weighing 10-20 pounds.

ADA Statement: Shelter House will provide reasonable accommodations in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.
