The Traffic Department at AKRF is on the lookout for a Transportation Systems Engineer to be based in either Stamford, CT or White Plains, NY. This role is crucial in assisting our municipal clients in developing advanced traffic signal systems and Intelligent Transportation Systems, as well as designing Complete Streets projects, sidewalks, bike lanes, linear roadway enhancements, drainage improvements, and other capital projects aimed at enhancing roadway safety and efficiency for all users. Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with a team of experts to devise traffic and transportation planning and engineering solutions for various projects.
  • Conduct thorough traffic impact assessments to evaluate the implications of new developments or modifications in transportation infrastructure.
  • Utilize traffic modeling techniques to simulate and analyze traffic flow and patterns, aiding in the prediction and resolution of potential challenges.
  • Develop, assess, and refine traffic improvement strategies to enhance roadway safety and operational efficiency.
  • Design traffic signal systems, including Intelligent Transportation Systems such as Emergency Vehicle Preemption (EVP), Transit Signal Priority (TSP), and Adaptive Traffic Control Systems (ATCS).
  • Engineer roadways and intersections, ensuring compliance with safety standards and effective traffic flow management.
  • Prepare and review technical documents and reports, ensuring precision and clarity in presenting findings and recommendations.
  • Engage actively in meetings to exchange ideas with clients, consulting partners, and other stakeholders.
  • Communicate analysis results, concerns, and recommendations effectively to clients and stakeholders.
  • Oversee small to mid-sized projects or act as a task leader, ensuring timely completion within budget and to client satisfaction.
Essential Qualifications:
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.
  • Preferred NYS or CT PE licensure (or the ability to obtain it).
  • Experience with local municipalities and agencies in Westchester County, Connecticut, and/or surrounding areas is preferred.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Proficient in trip generation and traffic impact analysis preparation.
  • Familiarity with MUTCD, AASHTO, HCM, ITE Trip Generation guidelines.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD and/or Microstation.
  • Experience with traffic engineering and planning software, such as HCS, Synchro/SimTraffic, VISSIM, Aimsum, AutoTurn.
  • Knowledge of Traffic Signal Design and familiarity with Connecticut DOT and/or New York State DOT guidelines is advantageous.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Adept at managing and meeting multiple deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
