The Healthcare Billing Specialist is responsible for managing essential processes related to the entry of patient demographics, insurance details, office charges, surgical fees, payments, and adjustments. This role collaborates closely with insurance coordinators to gain a comprehensive understanding of various insurance plans and the organization's participation with different carriers. Additionally, the Healthcare Billing Specialist will handle cashiering responsibilities, including settling patient accounts, issuing receipts, preparing bank deposits, and ensuring a balanced cash drawer.

Key Responsibilities

  • Exhibits a solid understanding of Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes, modifiers, and associated charges, ensuring accurate data entry into the system.
  • Records daily visit charges and payments into the appropriate patient accounts promptly and accurately, reconciling all batches for posting and forwarding them for verification.
  • Updates patient demographic records and gathers necessary billing and insurance information from patients and colleagues as required. Processes billing through the Health Care Finance Administration and Uniform Billing Form 92 (UB92).
  • Reviews visit tickets, claim forms, and explanations of benefits for potential discrepancies and communicates findings effectively.
  • Addresses all concerns, risk management issues, and protocol breakdowns with the supervisor, adhering to the established chain of command for matters outside the billing department.
  • Maintains a clean and organized workspace, including personal areas, computer rooms, and record storage.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • At least one year of experience in a data entry role, preferably within a medical setting. Educational qualifications may substitute for experience.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology is preferred.
  • Demonstrated speed and accuracy in data entry and 10-key operations.
  • Core competencies include attention to detail, organizational skills, effective communication, teamwork, and maintaining confidentiality.

Physical Requirements

  • The work environment is a standard office setting. The employee must effectively manage tasks amidst various distractions, including interactions with staff, patients, and vendors, as well as background noise.
  • While performing job duties, the employee is frequently required to sit and use hands for up to 8 hours daily. Communication through speaking and listening is also essential. Occasional standing, walking, reaching, and bending may be required.
  • The employee may occasionally lift or move items weighing up to 20 pounds, ensuring safe handling practices. Specific vision abilities necessary for this role include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
