As a Corrections Officer, you will play a vital role in maintaining custody and control of inmates in the metropolitan detention/corrections system. Your responsibilities will include enforcing laws and departmental regulations, assisting in the searching, booking, and fingerprinting of inmates, and coordinating arrangements for bond, legal representation, and personal assistance for inmates.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Assist in the initial processing of inmates, including searching, booking, fingerprinting, and photographing.
  2. Coordinate arrangements for bond, legal representation, and personal assistance for inmates, and schedule court appearances.
  3. Maintain order and report unusual conditions, policy violations, disturbances, or potential disorder to superiors.
  4. Patrol designated areas of the detention facility, control traffic to and from assigned areas, maintain security, and inspect the facility to ensure the safety and security of inmates.
  5. Provide or arrange for personal grooming of inmates and supervise sanitation practices.
  6. Administer emergency first aid if necessary and refer inmates to medical assistants, psychiatric service units, and counselors.
  7. Participate in fire and safety drills, lockdown incidents, and related emergency situations.
  8. Participate in the discharge process of inmates, issuance of clothing, and transportation arrangements.
  9. May be required to transport inmates and supervise inmate work details and community custody programs.
  10. Maintain logs and write reports as required by policy and standard operating procedures.
  11. Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner, provide information within the area of assignment, and resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. High School diploma or GED, or have met the requirements of the MDC Lateral Entry Program, plus one year of experience in the field of corrections or law enforcement.
  2. Valid New Mexico driver's license and maintain a valid NM driver's license while employed in this position.
  3. 18 years of age or older by the start of the Corrections Officer Training Academy.
  4. United States Citizen or permanent resident and provide an Alien Registration number.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA's):

  1. Preferred knowledge of and experience in the operations, services, and activities of a corrections and detention program.
  2. Preferred knowledge of the principles and practices of the criminal justice system, law enforcement, modern booking procedures, corrections, and detention theory and practice.
  3. Preferred knowledge of correctional institution security and inmate security practices, occupational hazards, and standard safety practices.
  4. Preferred knowledge of pertinent federal, state, and local codes, laws, and regulations and the ability to interpret and apply them.
  5. Preferred ability to apply knowledge of laws, regulations, and procedures concerning safety, security, and corrections operations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA's):

  1. Skill in performing basic computer functions.
  2. May require skills in the use and care of weapons, including firearms.
  3. Ability to develop skills in restraint and self-defense tactics.
  4. Ability to develop skills in the techniques of obtaining information through interrogation, investigations, and corrections observation.
  5. Ability to apply first aid, CPR, and related emergency practices and techniques.
  6. Ability to analyze hazardous situations in a rational, mature, and confident manner and to act effectively; to remain calm and effective under stressful situations.
  7. Ability to prepare clear and concise administrative reports.
  8. Ability to read, interpret, enforce, apply, and explain corrections laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  9. Ability to communicate and interact effectively and professionally with superiors, other officers, department personnel, and the general public.

Additional Requirements:

  1. Applicants successfully completing the background and interview requirements will then be scheduled to attend and must pass a written and oral psychological examination, drug screen, and physical examination.
  2. Employee must meet the minimum vision and hearing standards as identified in the medical screening form for Corrections Officers.
  3. Employee must comply with Bernalillo County safety guidelines.
  4. Employee must pass the physical agility test and maintain a fitness for duty status by testing yearly.
  5. Successful completion of the Corrections Department probationary period and MDC Training Academy.

Working Conditions:

  1. Shift work is required.
  2. The majority of essential duties are performed indoors in a temperature-controlled environment.
  3. Outdoor duties are sometimes required in the performance of essential duties and workers are exposed to natural weather conditions while performing outdoor duties.
  4. Workers may be exposed to intermittent noise and vibration, a variety of fumes and odors, contagious diseases, and potentially hostile and dangerous situations.
  5. Indoor working surfaces are even and may be carpeted or tiled.
  6. Indoor surfaces are typically dry and may involve the use of stairs.
  7. Outdoor surfaces may be even or uneven and may be wet or dry.
  8. Outdoor duties may involve the use of stairs or ladders and may be performed on inclines or hills.
  9. Outdoor surfaces may include natural ground, asphalt, or concrete.
  10. Workers may perform duties with or without directions from a supervisor.
  11. Workers may perform duties alone or as part of a select team.
  12. Work hazards include high stress levels of the job and operation of a vehicle.

Equipment, Tools, and Materials:

  1. Equipment typically used to perform administrative duties include the telephone, computer, telefax machine, typewriter, photocopy machine, pager, and two-way radio.
  2. Utilizes security equipment, restraint equipment, and mace as necessary, and weapons based on assignment.
  3. Utilizes first aid equipment, oxygen, fire extinguishers, and other safety equipment on an as-needed basis.
  4. Operates a county vehicle as assigned.
  5. Materials and products typically handled in the performance of administrative duties include a wide variety of forms and paperwork, reports, various writing utensils, and a wide assortment of other basic office supplies and materials.
