Position Summary

The role of the Litigation Counsel is pivotal in directing and supervising the defense and prosecution of the company's legal disputes, including commercial, product liability, personal injury, and employment matters. This position works closely with internal business clients and external legal counsel to achieve optimal resolutions. Reporting to the Associate General Counsel for Litigation, this role requires collaboration with various attorneys within the Law Department.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee outside counsel in managing the company's diverse litigation portfolio, developing effective case strategies and tactics.
  • Conduct thorough investigations and analyze relevant documents to support fact-based litigation positions.
  • Collaborate with Regulatory and R&D teams to formulate scientifically-based defense strategies.
  • Draft and refine legal documents, including briefs, pleadings, and correspondence, to advocate effectively for the company.
  • Implement Legal Holds for ongoing litigation and advise on document preservation policies.
  • Assist in directing outside counsel through all litigation phases, including mediations and responses to governmental inquiries.
  • Develop cost-effective case management strategies, including early assessments and focused discovery efforts.
  • Provide legal risk assessments and support corporate transactions through litigation due diligence.
  • Advise internal clients on best practices for legal risk mitigation across various issues.
  • Coordinate with the Insurance Department and external carriers regarding litigation and claims.
  • Contribute as a member of the Litigation Team, collaborating to achieve shared objectives.
Qualifications
  • Juris Doctor (JD) and Bachelor's degree from accredited institutions.
  • A minimum of 4 years of experience in litigation management, with a blend of law firm and in-house experience preferred.
  • Experience in product liability, personal injury, employment, and commercial contract disputes is essential.
  • Must be admitted to practice in at least one state bar.
Skills and Competencies
  • In-depth knowledge of civil procedure, legal research, and trial practices.
  • Exceptional analytical and advocacy skills, with strong oral and written communication abilities.
  • Proven experience in advising clients throughout the litigation process.
  • Familiarity with insurance-related litigation issues.
  • Ability to balance defense efforts with business needs and cost considerations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a team.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, integrity, and discretion in all interactions.
  • Proficient in managing a diverse workload and adapting to shifting priorities.
  • Technical proficiency in legal software and MS Office Suite.
  • Willingness to travel as necessary.
