Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technician to join our team at Hays County Transportation Department. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in heavy equipment repair and maintenance, with experience in diagnosing and repairing complex mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain and repair a variety of diesel heavy equipment, including trucks, loaders, bull dozers, backhoes, water pumps, and paving equipment.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical problems.
  • Overhaul and tune-up gasoline and diesel engines.
  • Perform oil changes and schedule preventive maintenance.
  • Field repairs on County roadways.
  • Repair and replace clutches and automatic transmissions.
  • Repair electrical systems, including lights, switches, alternators, starters, batteries, and wiring problems.
  • Repair vehicles and equipment for various Departments.
  • Repair light equipment chainsaws, weedeaters, etc.
  • Repair and replace hydraulic components.
  • Repair and replace fuel and water pumps.
  • Repair disc, drum, air, and hydraulic braking systems.
  • Repair and replace steering linkages and suspension parts.
  • Repair air conditioning and heating systems.
  • Prepare vehicles for inspections.
  • Weld and fabricate equipment.
  • Clean and inspect parts.
  • Test operate equipment.
  • Follow safety regulations and guidelines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Three years experience in heavy equipment repair and maintenance or any equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Valid Class C driver's license.
  • Osha 10 training preferred.
  • First Aid/CPR training preferred.
