Key Responsibilities:

Standard 1: Professional Duties
a. Collaborate with teachers to assist students effectively.
b. Participate in staff and parent meetings as required.
c. Engage in daily planning sessions with educators to comprehend educational strategies.
d. Complete assigned tasks as directed by the teacher, including timely preparation of classroom materials.
e. Help maintain a visually appealing, safe, and hygienic classroom setting.
f. Under teacher guidance, ensure a safe educational environment by regularly cleaning and disinfecting surfaces and toys.
g. Supervise students during bus rides, in hallways, and on the playground.
h. Assist in snack preparation and cleanup activities.
i. Carry out related duties as needed.
j. Provide personal care and assistance to children in daily living activities under teacher supervision.
k. Facilitate positive communication and interactions among peers and adults.
l. Attend team meetings as assigned.
m. Implement classroom-specific behavior management strategies under teacher guidance.

Standard 2: Professional Behavior
a. Maintain a cooperative and professional demeanor suitable for a school environment.
b. Follow program-specific policies and procedures diligently.
c. Undertake additional assigned duties as necessary.

Standard 3: Professional Development
a. Attend and engage in required training sessions to achieve 15 hours of approved training within the first six months and 30 hours within two years.
b. Participate in supervision and apply recommendations appropriately.
c. Attend staff meetings with the classroom teacher.

Standard 4: Compliance with Policies
a. Adhere to the organization's Code of Ethical Conduct.
b. Follow emergency preparedness protocols.
c. Fulfill departmental in-service education program requirements, which may include hours outside of regular agency hours.
d. Comply with fire and safety prevention protocols.
e. Observe policies regarding attendance, punctuality, appearance, and professional conduct.
f. Engage in quality improvement activities.
g. Pursue job-related self-development education.
h. Implement infection control practices and procedures.
i. Meet regulatory requirements, including annual physical examinations.

Standard 5: Additional Duties
a. Demonstrate an understanding of the needs of children and visitors across various age groups.
b. Address safety and psychological needs appropriately during work activities.
c. Support the needs of special groups, including those who are hearing impaired or physically challenged.
d. Maintain confidentiality regarding children and families, avoiding discussions in their presence.
e. Exhibit courteous and considerate behavior in all interactions, whether in person or on the phone.
f. Foster a welcoming atmosphere through positive body language and demeanor.
g. Respond promptly to requests from children and parents/guardians, referring them to the appropriate team member when necessary.
h. Promote teamwork and positive relationships among coworkers.
i. Collaborate respectfully with others.
j. Take individual responsibility for delivering high-quality service.
k. Direct parents/guardians/therapists to the teacher regarding children's educational needs.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Criminal background check clearance required.
  • Must obtain NYS Teacher Assistant Certification within six months of hire.
  • Effective communication and cooperative work skills are essential.
  • Experience with children and special education students is preferred.
  • A warm and calm demeanor is required.

Physical Requirements:
Physical aspects of the role may include lifting and transferring students as necessary.
