Kansas City, Missouri, United States Children's Mercy Full time

Overview

The Genetic Counseling Specialist II at Children's Mercy plays a crucial role in gathering essential information to facilitate diagnosis and guidance for conditions influenced by genetic factors. This position involves providing insights on recurrence risks, prognosis, and the natural progression of disorders in collaboration with a clinical geneticist. Additionally, the specialist may serve as an educator for various groups, including patients, community organizations, and students, particularly those in graduate and professional programs. The Genetic Counseling Specialist II is also responsible for independently developing, organizing, and leading educational and administrative initiatives within the Medical Genetics Section. Unlike the Genetic Counselor I, the Genetic Counseling Specialist II, having achieved certification from the American Board of Genetic Counseling, operates with greater autonomy and assumes a broader scope of responsibilities. Furthermore, this role requires the successful submission of research abstracts to national conferences, collaboration on research projects, and supervision of learners such as medical students and genetic counseling trainees.

At Children's Mercy, we are dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued. A successful candidate will contribute to our mission of creating a workplace that mirrors the diversity of the community we serve, embodying our core values of kindness, curiosity, inclusion, teamwork, and integrity.

We prioritize transparency with all potential candidates. To ensure the safety of our patients and staff, the seasonal influenza vaccine is a condition of employment. New hires must be prepared to provide immunization records and may need to receive vaccinations for measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), chicken pox (varicella), and Tdap if they lack evidence of immunity. Concerns regarding vaccinations can be discussed with Human Resources.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality clinical care for patients in Clinical Genetics and various subspecialty clinics.
  • Serve as a clinical resource for education and consultation for healthcare teams, community providers, student learners, and advocacy groups.
  • Apply evidence-based practices and engage in performance improvement initiatives.
  • Utilize expertise to manage costs effectively, ensuring responsible use of financial resources.
  • Participate in scholarly activities that enhance the knowledge base of Genetic Medicine.
  • 3562-EF-6

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree with 5-7 years of relevant experience.
  • Certified Genetic Counselor.
  • MS in Genetic Counseling is mandatory.
  • ABGC eligibility is required.
  • ABGC certification is essential.

Benefits at Children's Mercy

The benefits offered at Children's Mercy are among the many reasons we are recognized as a top employer in Kansas City. Our plans are tailored to meet the evolving needs of our employees and their families.

Remote Work/Work from Home

This position allows for intermittent remote work, where the selected candidate will collaborate with their manager to establish a schedule that includes both remote and on-site hours at a Children's Mercy location. Candidates must reside in the Kansas City metro area.

EEO Employer/Disabled/Vet

Children's Mercy hires individuals based on their skills, expertise, and ability to maintain professional relationships with colleagues, patients, and families. The selection process considers personal interviews, education, training, work experience, references, and background checks. We do not discriminate against applicants based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, creed, genetic information, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, ancestry, or veteran status. A drug screening will be conducted upon hire. Children's Mercy maintains a smoke and tobacco-free environment.

Our Commitment to Diversity & Inclusion

Children's Mercy is dedicated to building a diverse and inclusive workforce. Our patients and families come from various backgrounds, and we believe our strength lies in this diversity.
