Position Summary & Responsibilities

Position Overview:

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is seeking a part-time, fully remote Genetic Counselor specializing in Newborn Blood Spot screening. This role involves direct communication with families to discuss screening outcomes and the implications of genetic conditions. The incumbent will work collaboratively with healthcare professionals to ensure effective communication of complex genetic information.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver comprehensive counseling to families regarding the diagnosis, implications, and management options for hemoglobin disorders.
  • Collaborate with healthcare providers to ensure clear, compassionate, and accurate communication, aiding families in understanding the condition and its impact on their child's health.
  • Educate families about hemoglobin traits, including genetic inheritance patterns and potential health implications.
  • Provide support and resources to assist families in making informed decisions regarding health concerns related to hemoglobin traits.
  • Clarify the significance of carrier status for lysosomal storage disorders, including genetic implications and potential risks for future pregnancies.
  • Discuss findings of pseudodeficiency alleles with families, ensuring understanding of the difference between pseudodeficiency and disease.
  • Act as a primary contact for families and healthcare providers seeking clarification on newborn screening results.
  • Offer expert interpretation of screening results, addressing questions with accurate and empathetic communication.
  • Maintain current knowledge on advancements in newborn screening and genetic conditions to provide up-to-date information and guidance.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Master's Degree in Health, Healthcare, Genetics, Public Health, or a related field.
  • Licensing & Certification: Valid Driver's License required for operating state or private vehicles.
  • Minimum Qualifications: Master's Degree in relevant field, current American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) certification, and professional experience in genetic counseling, preferably in pediatric or newborn screening.
  • Experience in family engagement, customer service, and case management is essential.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and documentation skills are required to ensure thorough follow-up and case management.
  • Ability to work independently and remotely, demonstrating self-motivation and effective time management.
  • Commitment to health equity and providing accessible care to underserved populations.
