Job Summary

As an Information Systems Technician with the US Navy, you will play a critical role in maintaining the integrity and security of our communication systems. You will be responsible for establishing, monitoring, and maintaining radio frequency communication systems, as well as operating and maintaining global satellite telecommunications systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Establish and maintain radio frequency communication systems
  • Operate and maintain global satellite telecommunications systems
  • Transmit, receive, and store all incoming and outgoing messages
  • Manage and coordinate information systems security across platforms and fleets
  • Design, install, and operate wide-area-networks, computer systems, and associated devices
  • Perform network system administration, maintenance, and training, and manage network security
  • Install applications, troubleshoot user problems, and provide training and assistance with the use of computer hardware and software
  • Write programs to collect and distribute data for a variety of applications
  • Ensure the proper security and handling of communications materials, systems, and equipment
  • Perform diagnostics and data recovery operations, and maintain logs
Work Environment

As an Information Systems Technician, you will primarily be stationed aboard ships at sea, while you may also receive shore assignments. Your typical work environment will be a clean, climate-controlled indoor space used to house electronic equipment or computers.

Training and Advancement

Upon completion of initial training at Recruit Training Command Great Lakes, you will attend Class A Technical School in Pensacola, FL, for training on Microsoft, Cisco, and Oracle computer software and hardware fundamentals, automatic data processing, security, and system theory and operation. After A School, you may also attend submarine training, depending on your role.

Qualifications and Requirements

A high-school diploma or equivalent is required to become an Enlisted Sailor and an Information Systems Technician. You must also be a U.S. citizen eligible for a Top Secret security clearance, which requires a background investigation. Immediate family members must also be U.S. citizens.

Part-Time Opportunities

Serving part-time as a Navy Reserve Sailor, your duties will be carried out during your scheduled drilling and training periods. During monthly drilling, Information Systems Technicians in the Navy Reserve typically work at a location close to their homes.
