Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and coordinate information systems security across platforms and fleets

  • Perform network system administration, maintenance, and training, and manage network security
  • Install applications, troubleshoot user problems, and provide training and assistance with the use of computer hardware and software
  • Write programs to collect and distribute data for a variety of applications
  • Ensure the proper security and handling of communications materials, systems, and equipment
  • Perform diagnostics and data recovery operations, and maintain logs
Work Environment

As an Information Systems Technician, you will primarily be stationed aboard ships at sea, while you may also receive shore assignments. Your typical work environment will be a clean, climate-controlled indoor space used to house electronic equipment or computers.

Training and Advancement

Upon completion of initial training at Recruit Training Command Great Lakes, you will attend Class A Technical School in Pensacola, FL, for training on Microsoft, Cisco, and Oracle computer software and hardware fundamentals, automatic data processing, security, and system theory and operation. After A School, you may also attend submarine training, depending on your role.

Requirements

To become an Information Systems Technician, you must be a U.S. citizen eligible for a Top Secret security clearance, which requires a background investigation. You should also have good arithmetic, writing, and speaking skills, and be able to use and understand computers. Important physical attributes include good manual dexterity and physical strength.
