Job Summary

The Program Director of Project Rebound is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the program, which includes facilitating the enrollment of formerly incarcerated students, assessing their academic needs, and providing resources and services to aid in their success. The Program Director will develop and maintain strong relationships with faculty, staff, and administrators, as well as local community colleges and external stakeholders, to promote the success of Project Rebound.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide individualized pre-enrollment services to prospective Project Rebound students, including academic assessment and financial aid advising.
  • Provide ongoing direction, support, and programming for enrolled PR students to maximize their opportunities for success in graduation and career planning.
  • Communicate with parole and probation on behalf of current, graduated, and prospective students, and provide letters of support to the Board of Parole Terms, potential employers, and academic programs.
  • Teach soft skills courses to PR students.
  • Seek to foster collegiality and mentorship amongst Project Rebound students.
  • Recruit new and existing students for the program.
  • Organize and/or attend outreach activities.
  • Attend policy, advocacy, and community events to represent PR.
  • Develop and distribute outreach publications to create easy pathways to enrollment at SJSU for formerly incarcerated students.
  • Consult with the Executive Director on the development of the annual budget.
  • Manage accounts, providing regular budget reports to the Principal Investigator.
  • Oversee purchases for the program, preparing and submitting all requisitions for contracts and purchase orders.
  • Develop criteria for awarding emergency funding, tuition, and textbook financial assistance to students.
  • Assist the Executive Director in preparing the annual Chancellor's report.
  • Assist the Executive Director with fundraising and preparing reports for funders.
  • Create regular reports for presentation to the Executive Director, Chancellor's Office, and other invested parties.
  • Develop and maintain strong records and statistical data regarding outreach, applications, admissions, retention, nature of program participation, and graduation rates, as a means of evaluating the program and articulating the expansion of services available to clients.
  • Lead staff and student volunteers/interns.
  • Advise the Faculty Fellow on how they can best support the chapter and students.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to use independent judgment and deal with matters of a confidential and sensitive nature.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, writing, and communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, creating spreadsheets, graphs, and relevant data for reports.
  • Adequate knowledge of data collection and methods; and the ability to interpret statistical data compiled from program activities.
  • Knowledge of the criminal justice and reentry system.
  • Ability to advise students individually or in groups on varied and complex matters.
  • Ability to communicate with constituents in a professional and respectful manner.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with students, staff, faculty, and external agencies.
  • Ability to provide high-quality customer service in a high-demand environment.
  • Ability to set expectations, determine accomplishments, and results, and evaluate performance.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with the ability to provide high-level administrative support, multi-task, and prioritize.

Required Qualifications

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.
  • Four years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience, which includes experience in advising students individually and in groups, and in analysis and resolution of complex student services problems. A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling, guidance, or a job-related field may be substituted for two years of the required professional experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional, personal, or career counseling.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree.
  • Experience overcoming barriers similar to those confronting the project's target population (i.e., a formerly incarcerated person).
  • Two or more years of experience working with incarcerated and/or formerly incarcerated populations professional student services work experience (e.g., student advising).
  • Experience supervising other staff.
  • Familiarity/experience with the Project Rebound program.
