Job Overview

The Pre-Analytical Technician is responsible for executing pre-analytical and post-analytical tasks to prepare incoming specimens and facilitate ongoing diagnostic testing processes. This role is essential in managing materials shared with various laboratory facilities, ensuring that every sample entering the lab is handled with precision and care.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Receive, accession, and monitor incoming specimens utilizing the laboratory information system, Microsoft Office applications, and other manual tracking methods.
  • Prepare materials for technicians to enhance workflow, including cassettes, slides, processing send-outs, and other necessary procedures.
  • Possess a solid understanding of basic computer applications (PC) and the laboratory information system (LIS) to effectively manage tasks, document issues, and conduct routine inquiries.
  • Ensure adequate supplies are maintained for accessioning and laboratory operations.
  • Assist with additional responsibilities such as quality assurance/quality control, special projects, and process evaluations.
  • Uphold a clean and organized workspace, adhering to bloodborne pathogen standards for personal protective equipment and work environments.
  • Address issues as they arise and communicate effectively with team members to ensure optimal patient care and safety.
  • With the appropriate qualifications, may receive training to perform gross dissection for pathology specimens, with separate credentialing required for this task.
  • Undertake other assigned duties as necessary.

Qualifications:

Required: High school diploma or GED.

Preferred: Associate's degree or higher in a science or health-related discipline; a minimum of two years of experience in specimen handling or a front medical office role involving charting or accessioning.

Desirable: Familiarity with medical terminology and certification in Medical Assistance.
