Position Overview:
This role involves working under supervision to fulfill the routine responsibilities tailored to specific program requirements. The custodian may oversee other staff or volunteers as directed by a supervisor. Candidates should possess experience in engaging with people and demonstrate the ability to work independently while adhering to high standards of cleanliness and detail.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to pass a criminal background check.
- Possession of identification documents as mandated by the Department of Homeland Security.
- Prior experience in janitorial or maintenance roles.
- Physical capability to lift up to 40 pounds and perform tasks efficiently.
- Effective communication skills to report issues to supervisors.
Key Responsibilities:
- Follow a daily checklist for cleaning and maintaining both indoor and outdoor areas according to seasonal needs and scheduled events.
- Perform daily sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming of common areas, offices, and hallways.
- Dust and organize furnishings as necessary.
- Empty trash bins in various locations including meeting rooms, offices, and restrooms.
- Thoroughly clean restrooms and break areas, ensuring all surfaces are sanitized and stocked with necessary supplies.
- Conduct weekly window cleaning throughout the facilities.
- Maintain adequate stock levels in janitorial supply closets.
- Assist staff in utilizing appropriate cleaning methods and materials.
- Support shelter staff in ensuring building security and safety.
- Monitor the exterior of the building for cleanliness and maintenance issues.
- Promptly report any graffiti, repair needs, or hazardous conditions to the Property and Maintenance Coordinator.
- Perform snow removal and apply de-icing materials as required.
- Execute periodic floor maintenance tasks such as stripping, waxing, or burnishing as directed.
- Replace burnt-out light bulbs as needed.
- Operate necessary cleaning equipment and tools to carry out custodial duties.
- Complete additional tasks as assigned by the Property and Maintenance Coordinator or other supervisory staff.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist as needed.
- Capability to grasp, push, pull objects, and reach overhead.
- Experience operating various maintenance equipment.
- Ability to use office equipment and access information via computer.
- Ability to comprehend written instructions and communicate effectively.
- Regularly lift up to 40 pounds and perform janitorial tasks as required.
