Overview

The Amazon Fulfillment Technologies (AFT) Science team is in search of a highly skilled Applied Scientist, possessing robust optimization and analytical capabilities, to create production solutions for one of the most intricate systems globally: Amazon's Fulfillment Network. Within AFT Science, we design, construct, and implement optimization, simulation, and machine learning solutions that drive the operational systems at Amazon Fulfillment Centers worldwide. Our team addresses a variety of challenges faced in the network, including labor planning, demand prioritization, pick assignment, scheduling, and process flow optimization.

Key Responsibilities

As an Applied Scientist, you will collaborate with fellow scientists, software engineers, product managers, and operations leaders to formulate scientific solutions and analytics utilizing a diverse array of tools, directly influencing process efficiency and associate experience within the fulfillment network. Key responsibilities encompass:

  • Gaining a comprehensive understanding of operational processes, system architecture, and business requirements.
  • Conducting in-depth analyses of data and code to uncover opportunities for continuous enhancement or innovative approaches.
  • Developing scalable mathematical models for production systems to derive optimal or near-optimal solutions for both existing and emerging challenges.
  • Creating prototypes and simulations for agile experimentation of proposed solutions.
  • Advocating for technical solutions to business stakeholders, engineering teams, and senior leadership.
  • Collaborating with engineers to integrate prototypes into production systems.
  • Designing experiments to evaluate new or incremental solutions launched in production and establishing metrics to monitor performance.

About the Team

The Amazon Fulfillment Technology (AFT) team is responsible for designing, developing, and operating end-to-end fulfillment technology solutions for all Amazon Fulfillment Centers (FC). We integrate the physical and virtual realms to ensure Amazon customers receive their orders promptly.

The AFT Science team specializes in operations research, optimization, scheduling, planning, simulation, and machine learning. We possess domain expertise in the operational processes within the FCs and their challenges. Our focus is on advancements that support AFT tech teams and priority areas rather than specific fields of research or individual business partners. We influence every stage of innovation from inception to deployment, which includes both developing novel solutions and enhancing existing methodologies. Our production systems rely on a diverse set of technologies, prompting our teams to invest in multiple specialties as the needs of each focus area evolve.

Basic Qualifications

  • PhD or Master's degree with 4+ years of experience in science, technology, engineering, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in building models for business applications.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Java, C++, Python, or related languages.
  • Relevant industry or academic applied research experience in operations research, optimization, machine learning, statistics, or an equivalent field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD with applied research experience and expertise in Operations Research, Optimization, Machine Learning, Statistics, or a related field.
  • Experience in large-scale optimization and decomposition techniques, as well as planning and scheduling problems.
  • Experience in developing machine learning models and algorithms for business applications.
  • Experience in coding for production systems.
  • Experience with exploratory data analysis and experimental design.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across various US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $136,000/year in our lowest geographic market to $222,200/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is influenced by factors such as market location and may vary based on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company, and depending on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be included as part of a total compensation package, alongside a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
