Position Overview:
The Lead Applied Scientist role within Amazon's Stores Economics & Science (SEAS) team focuses on leveraging advanced methodologies in Economics, Statistics, Operations Research, and Machine Learning to navigate and enhance the intricate marketplace dynamics of Amazon's buyer-seller ecosystem.

About the Team:
The SEAS team is a multidisciplinary group dedicated to employing innovative technologies and harnessing the expertise of engineers and scientists to devise solutions for complex business challenges faced by Amazon.

Role Expectations:
We are in search of a distinguished Lead Applied Scientist capable of conceptualizing groundbreaking strategies to tackle challenging supply chain and logistics issues. The ideal candidate will possess:
  • A robust optimization skill set combined with a willingness to learn from peers.
  • The ability to implement and realize significant concepts effectively.

Essential Qualifications:
Applicants should have a PhD in Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Control Theory, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field. A proven track record of publications in prestigious peer-reviewed journals or conferences is required. Proficiency in programming languages such as Java, C++, or Python is essential, along with hands-on experience in developing optimization models tailored for business applications. A minimum of 10 years of relevant research experience post-PhD is expected.

Preferred Qualifications:
Ideal candidates will demonstrate deep knowledge in areas such as Distributed Optimization, Stochastic Optimization, Dynamic Programming, or Reinforcement Learning, and have experience in professional software development.

Key Responsibilities:
This role demands a proactive approach, exceptional analytical capabilities, and a data-driven mindset. Responsibilities include:
  • Gaining a comprehensive understanding of the end-to-end eCommerce supply chain to identify growth opportunities through scientific solutions.
  • Applying state-of-the-art optimization techniques to complex challenges.
  • Contributing to the strategic vision for the SEAS Supply Chain and Logistics team.
  • Facilitating alignment across various departments to meet business objectives.
  • Leading and mentoring scientists and engineers in the development, testing, and enhancement of scientific models aimed at optimizing inventory value and customer satisfaction.
  • Communicating innovations to both internal and external scientific communities and business leaders.
  • Providing guidance and mentorship to applied scientists, ensuring adherence to high standards of technical excellence in Operations Research.
