Position Overview:

Role Summary

The City of Roanoke is in search of a proactive and committed individual to fill the role of Senior Maintenance Technician (Street Maintenance Crew Leader) within our Department of Public Works - Transportation Division.

This position entails overseeing and actively participating in the operations of a crew tasked with street maintenance and construction initiatives.

Responsibilities include supervising a team of approximately 4 field operations personnel. This supervision involves assigning tasks and guiding a diverse group of maintenance technicians on various street maintenance projects. The role also requires managing and tracking Miss Utility location tickets.

It is essential to coordinate and uphold daily work schedules, monitor job progress, inspect work sites, and enforce all safety regulations, including work zone safety protocols.

The ideal candidate will possess strong problem-solving abilities, decision-making skills, effective verbal and written communication, and team leadership capabilities that yield successful project outcomes.

Candidates should be adept at utilizing various computer systems, including desktops, laptops, and mobile devices, as well as software platforms such as Microsoft Office Suite, QAlert, ArcGIS, and VueWorks.

A solid understanding of various infrastructure materials, including asphalt, concrete, and aggregates, is required. Additionally, candidates must be able to interpret construction drawings and utilize a builder's level. Experience in supervising and operating a range of heavy and light construction machinery is also necessary. Collaboration with other departmental operational and technical staff is expected in the execution of assigned duties.

This position involves operating heavy and light equipment during snow removal operations and may require participation in special events and emergency tasks, including occasional night and weekend work as needed.

Other responsibilities and tasks supporting the division may be assigned as necessary.

Qualifications

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

A high school diploma or equivalent (GED) is required, along with 3 to 5 years of experience and/or training in supervision, mowing, herbicide application, fertilizer application, and other landscape maintenance tasks, or a comparable combination of education and experience.

A current, valid Virginia Class A CDL license with air brake and tanker endorsement is required, or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire.

Additionally, candidates must possess current VDOT flagging and Intermediate work area protection certifications or be able to obtain them within 6 months of hire.
