About the Position:

Job Summary:

The City of Roanoke, Virginia is seeking a skilled Maintenance Technician I to join our team in the Parks and Recreation Department. As a key member of our Athletic Field Maintenance crew, you will be responsible for performing a variety of tasks related to the maintenance and upkeep of our athletic fields and park facilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate and maintain a range of motorized equipment, including lawn mowers, tractors, and other heavy machinery.
  • Perform skilled work in the maintenance and repair of athletic fields, including mowing, mulching, aeration, grading, seeding, and sodding.
  • Assist with special events, snow removal, and other emergency tasks as needed.
  • Collaborate with other team members to ensure the efficient and effective maintenance of park facilities.
  • Perform general laboring tasks, including collecting and removing trash and debris from city properties.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) and one to three years of experience and/or training in athletic turf maintenance and management or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver License within 12 months of hiring.
  • Preferred qualifications include a Registered Technician Spraying license, a Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification, and a Fertilizer Applicator Certification.

Working Conditions:

This is a non-exempt position that requires the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing priorities. The successful candidate will be able to work independently and as part of a team, and will be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as needed.
