Role Summary
The City of Roanoke is in search of a motivated and skilled individual to fill the role of Senior Maintenance Technician (Street Maintenance Crew Leader) within the Department of Public Works - Transportation Division.
This position entails overseeing and actively participating in the operations of a crew dedicated to street maintenance and construction initiatives.
Responsibilities include managing a team of approximately 4 field operations personnel. This leadership role involves assigning tasks and guiding a diverse group of maintenance technicians in various street maintenance assignments. The technician will also be responsible for managing and tracking Miss Utility location requests.Effective coordination and management of daily work schedules, monitoring job progress, inspecting work sites, and enforcing safety regulations, including work zone safety, are essential.
Candidates should possess strong problem-solving abilities, decision-making skills, and excellent verbal and written communication skills, along with proven team leadership capabilities that lead to successful project outcomes.
Proficiency in using various computer systems, including desktops, laptops, and mobile devices, as well as familiarity with software applications such as Microsoft Office Suite, QAlert, ArcGIS, and VueWorks, is required.
A solid understanding of different infrastructure materials, including asphalt, concrete, and aggregates, is necessary. Candidates must also be able to interpret construction drawings and utilize a builder's level. Experience in supervising and operating a range of heavy and light construction machinery is crucial.
This role may involve operating heavy and light equipment during snow removal operations and participating in special events and emergency tasks, which may require availability during nights and weekends.
Additional responsibilities may be assigned to support the division's objectives.

Required Qualifications
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
A high school diploma or equivalent (GED) along with 3 to 5 years of experience or training in supervision, landscaping, herbicide application, fertilizer application, and other maintenance tasks, or a comparable combination of education and experience.
Must hold a valid Virginia Class A CDL license with air brake and tanker endorsements or be able to obtain it within 6 months of employment.
Current VDOT flagging and Intermediate work area protection certifications are required or must be obtained within 6 months of employment.
