Job Title: Behavior Support Assistant

Job Summary:

The Behavior Support Assistant will work under the supervision of a certified teacher or behavior analyst to support students with special needs, particularly those with autism and behavioral difficulties. The successful candidate will assist in creating a safe and inclusive learning environment, providing individualized support to students, and collaborating with the teaching team to develop and implement behavioral interventions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist students with special needs in small groups or individually, providing support with adaptive functioning, quality of educational opportunities, and instructional tasks.
  • Work closely with the teaching team to develop and implement behavioral interventions, including crisis intervention and physical restraint techniques.
  • Provide individualized support to students, including visual communication systems and Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS).
  • Collaborate with the teaching team to create a safe and inclusive learning environment, promoting social-emotional wellness and academic growth.
  • Participate in training and professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge in crisis intervention, ABA, and other relevant areas.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent; courses in psychology, sociology, recreation, or related fields are desirable.
  • A.A. degree, 48 units beyond the high school diploma, or successful completion of the District Instructional Assistant Proficiency Test in reading, math, and per the Federal No Child Left Behind Act.
  • Willingness to complete training and use non-violent behavior intervention, emergency interventions, and physical restraint techniques.
  • Training in crisis intervention, ABA, and other relevant areas is highly desirable.

Working Conditions:

The Behavior Support Assistant will work in a school setting, interacting with students, teachers, and other staff members. The position requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and physically restrain and control a student up to 150 pounds with assistance.
