Position Overview

Under the direct supervision of the healthcare provider, the Medical Assistant Non-Certified will play a crucial role in patient evaluation and care, while ensuring accurate documentation is maintained.

This role requires a foundational understanding of both specialty and primary care, enabling the assistant to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care effectively.

The individual will be responsible for coordinating care to guarantee that high-quality, compassionate patient services are delivered.

Responsibilities include managing patient interactions at office locations and serving as a liaison with various organizations and departments.

The position may also involve ordering medical, pharmacy, and office supplies necessary for patient care management.

Compliance with all policies and procedures of Mid Michigan Health, as well as adherence to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations, is essential.

Additionally, the Medical Assistant will assist in training new employees, students, and temporary staff as needed.

The clinical responsibilities include providing patient education, assisting with specialty care procedures, managing symptoms, being available for emergencies, monitoring compliance, and educating patients and families about medications, including potential side effects.

The role may also encompass general office duties such as keyboarding, filing, and operating office equipment as required. The specific expectations for this position may vary based on the assigned practice, and the immediate supervisor will clarify responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

(30%) Manage incoming calls, schedule urgent/emergent appointments, and relay test results. Provide support and direction to patients for consultations, testing, and insurance pre-certification documentation.

(30%) Welcome patients and their families, perform routine pre-examination tasks including vital signs, and accurately document objective and subjective data regarding the presenting condition. Maintain patient records through tasks such as orders reconciliation and secure messaging.

(20%) Assist the provider during examinations and procedures.

(20%) Prepare and sanitize the patient area, set up necessary equipment, and ensure cleanliness post-procedure. Dispose of contaminated materials and sterilize medical instruments.

Additional Duties

Conduct comprehensive patient assessments as required within the scope of practice.

Administer patient care tasks such as injections, minor dressing changes, and blood specimen collection.

In certain practices, competency in assisting with procedures like electrocardiograms (EKG), Pulmonary Function Tests (PFT), Ankle Brachial Pressure Index (ABI), and Non-stress Tests (NST) may be required.

Maintain a clean and safe environment for both patients and colleagues.

Travel to satellite clinics may be necessary.



Demonstrate proficiency in necessary computer functions in the office setting, including MAPS, MCIR Practice Management, Electronic Medical Records, and other relevant software.

Exhibit critical thinking skills for effective patient management.

Uphold a high level of confidentiality and ensure patient rights are respected in accordance with HIPAA regulations.

May be required to perform clerical tasks such as completing insurance forms, managing correspondence, arranging hospital admissions, answering phones, and updating patient medical records.

Order supplies and medications as needed.

Maintain accurate documentation and coding in medical records as per policy, and participate in annual reviews for quality assurance.

Address the age-specific needs of the patient population served, as evidenced by observation and feedback.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Mid Michigan Health is a technology-driven organization, and employees are expected to demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Windows. Participation in additional training opportunities may be required.

Certifications and Licensures

BLS - Basic Life Support

Required

Equivalent Experience - Must be obtained within three months of hire or transfer.

Required Education

Education: Technical Certificate

Comments: Graduation from a medical assistant program is mandatory.

Preferred Certifications:
Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through American Medical Technologists (AMT)
Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) through American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
or equivalent Medical Assistant Credential (e.g., Certified Clinical Medical Assistant CCMA).

Experience, Training, and Skills

Strong interpersonal skills are essential for effective communication with individuals and groups at all levels.

Annual OSHA training is mandatory according to the Exposure Control Plan.

Knowledge of medical office policies and procedures typically acquired through three to five years of experience in a healthcare setting is preferred.

Physical and Mental Requirements

Ability to manage stressful situations, including those involving public contact, trauma, grief, and death.

Must be able to wear personal protective equipment as required.

Capability to move freely within the facility and perform job functions as outlined.

Overall vision and hearing are necessary, with or without assistive devices.

Frequent sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods may be required, along with postural changes such as stooping or kneeling.

Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other infectious materials is possible; adherence to safety protocols is essential.

Ability to multitask, work independently, and maintain regular attendance is expected.

Physical Demand Level:
Light. Must be able to occasionally lift or carry 11-20 lbs. and frequently handle 10 lbs. or engage in walking, standing, pushing, or pulling activities.
